Blago's Staycation

Family to Florida while guv stays behind

It was a week ago today that Gov. Rod Blagojevich was awakened by an early morning phone call informing him that federal agents were at his front door to arrest him. One of the most extraordinary weeks in American politics followed, and the Blagojeviches are worn out. So what are they going to do now? They're going to Disneyland!

At least that was one of many pieces of conjecture after the governor was seen Monday morning packing a big maroon suitcase into a minivan identified by ABC7 News reporter Chuck Goudie as belonging to Patti Blagojevich. Others included  a really big comb, Ed Genson's fee - in cash, and unused flu vaccine (See "Mystery of the Day"). And of course, the inevitable: computer hard drives,

But "state government sources" told Goudie that Patti and the two Blagojevich kids were on their way to Sanibel Island, Florida, where Patti's father, Ald. Dick Mell, owns a home on the gulf and likes to fish.

Rod was originally supposed to accompany his family for a sunny vacation, but now must stay behind to plan his defense and further confound the state.

So it's a working staycation for the governor, and just more arduous work for the rest of us.
