An Eye on Your Baby's Health

Calls for a simple exam, at birth

The nation's top pediatric organization says even before a baby goes home from the hospital, pediatricians should do a simple eye exam that may tell them a lot more about the health of the child.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) now recommends what's called a red reflex exam, even for babies in neonatal nurseries.

It's a diagnostic tool that the AAP says will allow doctors the advantage of intervening early, if there's a problem.
