A Celebration of Sangria

It's (almost) August -- time to drink in the traditional Spanish summer cocktail

BIN 36, the River North wine bar extraordinaire, is continuing its ongoing 10th anniversary celebration with $5 glasses of sangria throughout August. (And you know this won't be any generic sangria combo if BIN 36 wine director Brian Duncan has anything to say about it.) Stay tuned for more birthday specials at BIN 36 through December -- each month the price drops a dollar!

Learn how to master the art of sangria making at a Mixology 101 class on Thursday, Aug. 6 at Old Town Spanish spot Eivissa. Head mixologist Arunas Bruzas will walk participants through a hands-on session featuring the classic Spanish summer drink. You'll learn the proper mixing technique to make some of Eivissa's creative sangria recipes, including Vi-Negre (red sangria with cinnamon, vanilla and orange juice), Nabiu (white sangria with acai berry, blackberries, red grapes and an energy shot) and Amnesia Sangria (spiked with absinthe). You'll also get to sample passed tapas like croquetas de jamon, empandillas de carne and quesos artisanos. Eivissa's sangria class is set for 6:30-8:30PM and costs $25 to attend. Call 312-654-9500 to make a reservation.

Sangria lovers, mark your calendars for Wednesday, Aug. 12. That's when Meson Sabika, the beloved Spanish dining destination in west suburban Naperville, will be hosting a benefit sangria tasting on its lush outdoor patio. You'll get to sip a variety of flavored sangrias, including peach, pomegranate, mango and apple versions, along with an array of passed tapas. The soiree will go from 5:30-7:30PM and costs $15 to attend. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the festive party will go toward Loaves & Fishes, a community food pantry.
