An off-duty firefighter rescued a woman from a burning high-rise in Old Town on Sunday.
The 2-11 alarm fire broke on the 28th floor of 1411 N. Sandburg Terrace around 2 p.m., according to Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford.
Crews were able to get the blaze under control within 15 minutes and it was mostly contained to the top-floor unit, Langford said. The fire was out by 2:30 p.m.
An off-duty firefighter went in to the high rise and rescued a woman from the burning unit, Langford said. The woman, in her 50s, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital suffering from burns and smoke inhalation, he said. She was listed in serious condition.
Since the fire was on the top floor, smoke was not as much of a problem and the lower floors were unaffected, Langford said.
Last week, a high-rise fire in the Streeterville neighborhood killed a woman and injured 12 others before firefighters were able to extinguish it.
