17-Year-Old Denied Bail in NW Side Murder

The fatal shooting occurred on the night of Oct. 8

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with shooting another teenager to death earlier this month in the Montclare neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

Deonte Taylor faces a count of first-degree murder in the Oct. 8 shooting of 16-year-old Jose Alvarez, according to the Cook County state’s attorney’s office. He was denied bail during a hearing Thursday at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.

About 10:30 p.m., Alvarez was dropped off near his home in the 3000 block of North Rutherford after driving around with Taylor and two other people earlier in the evening, prosecutors said. Taylor and Alvarez had been arguing in the vehicle before it arrived in the block.

When Alvarez got out of of the vehicle from a rear seat, Taylor exited the front passenger seat and shot Alvarez in the chest, prosecutors said.

Alvarez was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was pronounced dead at 11:11 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Taylor was taken into custody Tuesday, according to Chicago police records.

His next court date was scheduled for Nov. 13.
