Billy Joel Pledges $1M to Save LI High School for The Arts

Billy Joel is pledging $1 million to help save Long Island High School for the Arts from closing.

A spokeswoman for the singer says he would donate the money if the Nassau County BOCES vows to keep the school open for three years.

School officials have said that the school is facing closure because of low enrollment. They say it has a deficit of about $400,000 for the current academic year.

Newsday says the money would come from his foundation.

The Syosset-based school was founded in 1973. It shares its campus with another school, the Doshi STEM Institute. The total enrollment at both schools is 138 students -- less than half its capacity.
