J-Hud: Last-Minute Decision Saved My Life

Oscar-winning actress said she was with fiancé David Otunga in Florida in October 2008 when she learned that her mother, brother and nephew had been shot and killed

Jennifer Hudson says a last-minute decision to watch her fiancé in a wrestling match three years ago saved her life.

The Oscar and Grammy winner said she was with fiancé David Otunga in Florida in October 2008 when her mother, brother and nephew were shot and killed.

"That's one of the things that saved my life," she told Ebony magazine. "I flew out to see him. That's why I'm still here."

The bodies of her mother and brother were found Oct. 24 2008 at their home on Chicago's South Side. The body of nephew Julian King was found days later on the city's West Side. The estranged husband of Hudson's sister, William Balfour, is charged in the murders.

Hudson earlier this week denied rumors that her relationship with Otunga had collapsed and told Access Hollywood at last Sunday's American Music Awards that a Chicago wedding was still in the works.

Balfour pleaded not guilty to the slayings. His trial begins next February.
