As expected, "Iron Man 3" completely dominated the box office this weekend.
After setting a box office franchise record at midnight Friday, the highly anticipated superhero flick went on to rake in a whopping $175.3 million this weekend, scoring the second biggest opening weekend of all time (behind "The Avengers'" $207.5 million weekend last year).

The film, starring Robert Downey, Jr., shot past the opening weekends of both "Iron Man" and "Iron Man 2," which nabbed $98.6 million and $128.1 million, respectively.
Globally, "Iron Man 3" has amassed $680.1 million only 12 days after it was released internationally, making it highly likely that it will hit the $1 billion mark worldwide. To put that amount into perspective, "Iron Man 2's" final worldwide total was $624 million.
Meanwhile, "Pain and Gain" and "42" still remained in the top three, with the bodybuilder flick bringing in $7.6 million and the Jackie Robinson biopic landing $6.2 million.
Tom Cruise's "Oblivion" and animated film "The Croods," followed with $5.8 million and $4.2 million, respectively.
