Aaron Sorkin's ‘A Few Good Men' to Air Live on NBC

A live production of "A Few Good Men" from writer-producer Aaron Sorkin is coming to NBC next year, the network announced on Wednesday.

Set in 1986 in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the stage drama centers on military lawyer Lt. Daniel Kaffee, who is tasked with defending three Marines on trial for murder. The accused assert they were acting under orders.

Sorkin – famous for bringing "The West Wing" to NBC – wrote the original Broadway play which debuted in 1989. "The Newsroom" creator then adapted "A Few Good Men" for the big screen in 1992. The film starred Tom Cruise, Demi Moore and Jack Nicholson, received four Academy Award nominations, and made the line of dialogue "You can't handle the truth!" famous.

"I am thrilled that Aaron Sorkin is coming back to NBC to adapt and produce a live broadcast of his electrifying play 'A Few Good Men,' which seems as timely as ever today,” said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment in a statement. "Aaron is one of the most acclaimed theater, television and film authors of our time, and I am pleased that the live event business that we pioneered with musicals is now expanding into other genres and attracting artists of his caliber."

NBC’s production will be based on the stage version, with Craig Zadan and Neil Meron attached as executive producers. The duo produced all of NBC’s previous live musicals ("The Sound of Music," "Peter Pan," "The Wiz" and are on deck for the upcoming production of "Hairspray Live!" set for the 2016 holiday season. This is NBC's first 21st century foray into live drama.

"I’ve been incredibly impressed watching NBC resurrect live musical theater for television and I’m eager to team up with Craig and Neil to help bring live drama back as well," a statement from Sorkin read. He will write the teleplay adaptation and also executive produce along with Zadan and Meron.

Sorkin was awarded six Emmys for "The West Wing," which ran for seven seasons on NBC and aired from 1999 to 2006.

A premiere date for "A Few Good Men" was not released but the production is expected to air in early 2017.
