David Cross: I Did Cocaine in the Same Room as Barack Obama

"I’m not proud of it, nor am I ashamed of it,” Cross tells Playboy of White House Correspondents' Dinner stunt

Funnyman David Cross said he once snorted cocaine at a White House Correspondents' Dinner just for the bragging rights.

The “Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret” star was asked in a Playboy Q & A about rumors he did cocaine within 40 feet from President Barack Obama back in 2009.

Cross told Playboy he was closer to 65 feet away from Obama at the Correspondents' Dinner, but he didn’t do “that much” cocaine.

“It was literally the size of, I don’t know, a tick. It was a tiny granule of coke that I put on my wrist and said, ‘Watch this. I need a witness,’” Cross said. “And then I ducked under the table and did it. It wasn’t like I got high.”

Cross compared his “jolt” to the same as would happen when licking an empty espresso cup.

“It was just about being able to say that I did it, that I did cocaine in the same room as the president. I’m not proud of it, nor am I ashamed of it,” Cross said. “My one regret is that I got my girlfriend [actress Amber Tamblyn] in trouble by association.”

Tamblyn had no idea what he had planned, Cross said, “and because of that she’ll never be invited to the White House again. That’s not cool.”

Cross told Playboy that he’s no longer the regular drug user he once was. But he said he still gets “curious about whatever new drug comes down the pike.”

“There was a long period when I indulged in drugs, but I don’t think I was ever addicted to any of them,” he said. “I do think crack is addictive. I smoked it once, and it was a huge wake-up call. It was pretty amazing. I totally get the hype on it. But when it came time to get some more, I knew very clearly that if I stayed there—and I wanted to—my life would change right then and there for the worse. I never touched crack again.”
