Courtney Love Loses Custody of Daughter Frances Bean

Kurt Cobain's daughter handed over to Cobain's mom

Courtney Love's daughter wants to live with her grandmother.

Frances Bean Cobain, the 17-year-old daughter of Love and the late Nirvana rocker Kurt Cobain, was taken from her mom’s custody this week, according to a court order.

She is now in the custody of Cobain's mother Wendy O'Connor and Kurt Cobain's sister Kimberly Dawn Cobain, The Associated Press reported.

There was no word in the three-page order about why the guardianship was changed, though Courtney Love’s lawyer said rumors of a possible drug relapse by the singer -- who has spent time in jail, on probation and under house arrest for past drug abuse-- were unfounded.

"Courtney's been clean for years and is perfectly fine," the lawyer, Keith A. Fink, told People. "This is simply about Frances preferring to live with her grandmother at this time."

He added: "Frances is 17 and a strong-willed child, and this is a decision she made on her own. No matter what, Courtney loves her daughter more than anything in the world."

Frances Bean was last taken under O’Connor’s custody in 2003 following her mother’s arrest for breaking into an ex-boyfriend’s home, People reported.

Love regained legal control over her daughter in January 2005.

In an interview with Harpers’s Bazaar last year, Frances Bean described her grandmother as “probably the person I respect most out of anybody in the world.”

Cobain's mother and sister will have custody of Frances Bean until February but won't be able to access her trust, the court order reads. A court hearing will be held Feb. 10.
