Mayor Lightfoot Heading to NYC, Will Appear on Colbert's Late Show

Lightfoot’s office said the mayor plans to leave Sunday and will be on the East Coast through Tuesday

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is headed to New York City this weekend for her second big trip out of town during her first month in office.

Lightfoot’s office said the mayor plans to leave Sunday and will be on the East Coast through Tuesday, speaking at an LGBTQ Gala and meeting with NYC Mayor and Democratic presidential candidate Bill DeBlasio as well as former Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

“There’s things that you can learn by being in the room with people that is different than talking over the phone or reading a policy paper,” Lightfoot said Friday.

She noted she plans to talk mostly about the environment and climate change.

She’ll also make a television appearance while in the Big Apple. She’s scheduled to appear on Stephen Colbert’s late night show airing next Thursday.

“I won’t reveal it, but we have a couple of fun things we’re going to do,” she said.

Last week, Lightfoot visited Los Angeles and was invited to a private dinner at Oprah Winfrey’s mansion.

Her New York City visit will also include a stop on Wall Street and possibly meetings with New York City police officials.

“Any time that I can go to another city, particularly another large city like LA or now New York, and learn from leaders there first-hand about a number of different issues I’m going to take advantage of that opportunity,” she said.
