Rauners, Pritzkers Made $54 Million in 2017, Tax Returns Show

The number marked Rauner's lowest annual earnings of the past five years

Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic challenger J.B. Pritzker each made more than $54 million in state taxable income in 2017, according to tax returns released Tuesday.

The number marked Rauner's lowest annual earnings of the past five years.

Rauner and his wife Diana paid just under $2.2 million in state income taxes and $13.9 million in federal income taxes, their joint returns show. That puts their federal tax rate at 26.5 percent of their adjusted gross income.

Pritzker and his wife paid $811,816 in state income taxes and more than $14.8 million in federal income taxes.

As he has done for the past five years, Rauner released only the 1040 forms showing how much money they made, but withheld schedules or any other information that may detail how. Pritzker did the same.

Both have not released complete information, refusing to provide their entire federal and state income tax returns. Pritzker also did not disclose tax returns for trusts or the names of the trusts.

Each candidate has offshore investments in tax havens. They are the richest people to ever run for governor in Illinois.

The federal forms released Tuesday show that the Rauners made $8.2 million in taxable interest, $1.2 million in tax-exempt interest and $35.2 million in capital gains, among other sources of income. [[492867501, C]]

Rauner has released portions of his tax returns for the past five years, beginning with his 2013 filing which showed that he and his wife took home $60.8 million. They reported an adjusted gross income of $57.5 million the following year, which jumped to more than $187 million in 2015. He made $91 million in 2016, his returns for that year showed.

Before he was elected governor in 2014, Rauner served as the chairman of Chicago-based private equity firm GTCR. Since launching his bid for governor, he has poured more than $95 million into his campaign funds.

Pritzker, a venture capitalist and billionaire Hyatt heir, revealed late last year that he made $15 million in 2016. Rauner has criticized that number and has accused Pritzker of "hiding from taxes."

Pritzker has long said he paid taxes and said at the time he and trusts benefitting him paid a combined $25 million in state taxes and $136 million in federal taxes over three years.
