Cook County Commissioner and former mayoral candidate Jesus "Chuy" Garcia spent the weekend in Iowa returning a favor to presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.
Garcia represented Sanders at this year's League of United Latin American Citizens Iowa Latino Leadership Banquet in Des Moines and also hosted a "meet and greet" event at the Bernie 2016 headquarters.
In April, before Sanders officially announced his presidential campaign, the Vermont senator made a trip to Chicago to publicly endorse Garcia days before the runoff election against Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Sanders also endorsed 10th Ward City Council candidate Susan Sadlowski Garza, who won the aldermanic seat by just 20 votes.
"At a time when the wealthiest people and largest corporations are becoming richer while virtually everyone else is becoming poorer, working-class people have got to fight back," Sanders said in April. "And that is what the campaigns of Chuy and Susan are all about."
At the event in Des Moines, Garcia praised Sanders for his work on civil rights issues and immigration reform.
"Latinos are a critical part of the political revolution," Garcia told Hola America News. "And we support Bernie's efforts to create an economy that works for us all."
Sanders took a vacation from campaigning in Iowa over the weekend and instead took his grandchildren trick-or-treating in New Hampshire.
