Police Superintendent Meets with New Recruits

McCarthy stressed representing the department well

Recruits at the Chicago Police Academy got a guest lecture from their eventual proposed boss as they began their training Monday.

Police Supt. Garry McCarthy spoke to the recruits. He emphasized representing the department well, noting individual encounters with officers create an impression of the entire department.

"There are huge, huge gaps in many communities where people don't trust us, and in some cases, it's our fault," he said.

He added that he thinks there is no more noble or honorable thing for them to do with their lives, and that he hopes to see them on the force soon.
