Obama, Kirk Exchange Exploding Fist Bump

President Obama is well known to be fond of the fist bump.

Now he's apparently moved on to the exploding fist bump. Or maybe he's just reserving that for Illinois senators.

As Obama advanced toward the podium to give his State of the Union address Tuesday, he spied Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk, ushered Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Martin Dempsey out of the way, and offered the gesture.

In a show of bipartisanship, Kirk returned it.

Those watching NBC News' coverage of the State of the Union may have caught the exchange but not the actual exploding fist bump due a cut-away of the camera. But others watching the pool feed noticed it.

The website Gawker, as they often do with these sort of things, offered the exploding fist bump up as an animated gif.

Kirk returned to the Senate last month after more than a year away to recover from a stroke. One of his primary therapists from the Rehabilitation Center of Chicago was on hand as an invited guest.
