U.S. Senator Dick Durbin endorsed Mayor Rahm Emanuel for re-election Sunday at an event in the Pilsen neighborhood.
Durbin highlighted the STAR Scholarship program and touted Emanuel's active role in leading it in Chicago. The event was attended by students to show them the benefit of the program for them and their families, according to the mayor's office.
"Everyone who works with Rahm knows that he's a hard-charging guy, but that energetic personality is always rooted in a desire to not waste a minute to improve the lives of the people he serves," Durbin said.
Among other speakers at the event were students enrolled in the STAR program and Rep. Luis Gutierrez, who also endorsed Emanuel.
"Rahm, Senator Durbin and I just had a very powerful conversation with these bright young people about their dreams -- and what our mayor has done and is doing to help young people succeed," Gutierrez said. "This is going to make a huge difference in the lives of countless families here in Chicago."
