Following Daley's decision not to run, President Obama recommended his Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, for Chicago Mayor on Thursday: "I think he would be an excellent mayor."

Rahm Emanuel's departure from the White House becomes official Friday at 10:05 a.m.

That's when President Barack Obama will make a "personnel announcement" from the White House Rose Garden.

Ward Room first reported the possible farewell Tuesday.

Press Secretary Robert Gibbs declined to engage in specifics, but indicated that the president would announce Emanuel's departure while likely naming Peter Rouse, a senior adviser, to fill his post.

Emanuel is expected to return to Chicago Monday to begin a mayoral "listening tour."
