Two years from now the political parties will be holding their national conventions and already the Democratic Party has narrowed its 2020 site list to three cities.

Those cities include Milwaukee, Houston or Miami Beach. A fourth finalist, Denver, dropped out because the July 13-16 dates don’t work. That is earlier than usual.

The Democrats announced their dates first, looking to gain attention before the Tokyo Olympics on July 24, 2020. The Republican Party has not yet set a convention date.

It would be Milwaukee’s first time to host either party.

The convention would be held at the city’s new basketball arena, which is opening later this year. Wisconsin voters supported President Donald Trump, so a Democratic convention is viewed as an attempt to win back those voters.

In 2016, Philadelphia said the Democratic convention attracted 54,000 people and was worth $230 million in economic activity.

As for the Republican Convention, the process has not been as public.

Charlotte is the only city open about its interest. It hosted President Barack Obama’s re-nomination in 2012.

San Antonio has pulled out of the running, according to published reports. There’s conflicting information whether Las Vegas has apparently declined to submit a bid. Some GOP Nevada officials were interested, but city officials express concern for security costs.
