Meeks, Halpin Campaigns Accused of Forging Signatures

Rod Halpin and State Senator James Meeks have a signature issue.

The mayoral candidates have both been accused of fabricating signatures on their nominating petitions.

Notary public Maricela Rodriguez said Tuesday that her signature was forged on a number nominating petition sheets by the two men -- 1,185 for Halpin and 97 for Meeks.  Her signature and stamp appear on 266 petitions circulated by homeless sex offender Arthur J. Hardy.

The issue could be more damaging for Meeks, who is considered a viable candidate and not a novelty like Halpin.

Hearings begin next week on the challenges.  Election day is now just 83 days away.
