Israel to Remove Six-Pointed Star From Flag: "It's a GD Symbol"

Ward Room Blogger Edward McClelland often uses satire in this space. This is one of those times. Israel is not really considering changing their flag.

City Clerk Susana Mendoza’s decision to ditch an auto sticker because the upraised hands drawn by a 15-year-old are flashing Maniac Latin Disciples signs has raised worldwide awareness about gang symbols infiltrating public life.

This morning, after reading about the controversy in Chicago, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his nation will abandon the iconic six-pointed star, and find a new emblem for its flag.

“The six-pointed star has been a symbol of the Jewish people almost since the time of Abraham,” Netanyahu told reporters. “But it is also a symbol of the Black Gangster Disciples, spray painted on trees, walls and alleys to mark their turf. Given that, the nation of Israel has to be concerned about the message we are sending when we put such a symbol on our flag, our schools, and our synagogues.”

In addition, Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner said his magazine will drop its famous bunny, to avoid confusion with the Vice Lords, and the Sacramento Kings will replace their crown logo with a scepter, because, according to team president Geoff Petrie, “we’ve been made aware that the crown is associated with the Latin Kings, and we believe that we have a responsibility, as role models, not to glamorize gang life among young people.”

Reached at this office in the Ninth Circle of Hades, Satan said he has decided to stop carrying a pitchfork, since that multi-pronged farm implement has also been appropriated by the Gangster Disciples.

“I really don’t want to be associated with an organization that sells drugs, carries out drive by shootings and generally makes inner-city life a Hell on Earth,” the Devil said. “That’s not the kind of image I want to be associated with. Like everyone else today, I want commend the Chicago City Clerk for making us all aware of how easy it is to find gang iconography in seemingly innocent symbols…if that’s what you’re looking for.”

City Clerk Susana Mendoza and former police Supt. Jody Weis, who now heads the Chicago Crime Commission, agreed to pull Herbie Pulgar's vehicle sticker design due to its potential relation to the Maniac Latin Disciples Gang, which also uses hearts and hands in its symbolism. However, Pulgar's mother, Jessica Loor, argues that the allegations are completely false. Janice Gould, Pulgar's art teacher at Lawrence Hall Youth Services, says Pulgar is devastated by the controversy.
