Hillard Resigns Top Cop Post

The Chicago Police department has been under the control of a second in command for much of the weekend.

Chicago Police News Affairs confirmed that Beatrice Cuello, Asst. Superintendent of Administrationthe CPD had operational control of the department after interim Superintendant Terry Hillard resigned his acting post late last week.

Hillard had said he would leave with Mayor Richard Daley, but most thought he would wait until the new Superintendent took office.

Emanuel's choice to lead the department, Garry McCarthy, the New Jersey top-cop who arrived in Chicago to attend the Emanuel Inuaguration, still needs City Council confirmation.

The first council meeting after the swearing in is Wednesday.
