Benson worked in education for 35 years, working as a teacher for 17 years and as an administrator for 18 years. She retired as the superintendent of Streator Elementary Schools at the end of the 2011-2012 school year.
Benson says good education policy helps make the state attractive to businesses and entrepreneurs.
