Runner to Compete in Springfield 5K from Afghanistan

Air Force captain Lauren McQuone will run on a treadmill

An Air Force captain will lace up her running shoes this week for a charity 5K in Springfield.

So what's the catch?

The 27-year-old from Fresno, California will run the race from Afghanistan.

Lauren McQuone is one of about 2,400 people who will participate in Friday's Komen Springfield Race for the Cure. Except she'll run it on a treadmill about 7,000 miles away, the Peoria Journal Star reported.

McQuone paid the registration fee and got her race t-shirt in the mail.

She says she often runs races in support of the breast cancer charity when she's back home in the U.S. So she decided to pick several Komen races to run remotely to continue to raise money for breast cancer research.

Her mother died of breast cancer in 1993.
