Shamrock Shuffle Runners Show Tutu Solidarity

The Shamrock Shuffle has always been known to attract runners wearing weird and wacky outfits, but there were more tutus than usual at Sunday's annual race.

Many of the runners were showing solidarity with a San Diego cancer survivor, who was criticized by SELF magazine for wearing the tutu in the LA Marathon.

Monika Allen said the picture appeared in a section called “The BS Meter," with a caption that refers to a "tutu epidemic" and basically makes fun of the women's outfits, she said.

Allen says she wore the tutu while undergoing chemotherapy for brain cancer, and her company makes the garments and donates the proceeds to a girls' charity.

SELF apologized for its statements about the photo, but judging by Sunday's tutu-clad nation, an athletic fashion trend has been born.
