“Rise of the Planet of the Apes” Trailer a Cautionary Tale About Playing God

It's not until you see it with your own eyes that you realize how absurd it is cast James Franco as a world-class scientist.

Franco stars Will Rodman, a San Francisco-based researcher who discovers a drug that "allows the brain to cure itself. We call it (dramatic pause) The Cure." Naturally, he tests it on apes, the apes get smart and then they get pissed. It's a story as old as time itself.

Obviously there's plenty about the plot to be revealed, but we always got the impression that it was humans that destroyed their own world, now we find out it was an ape uprising? This changes everything.

Let's just say we found the four-second teaser a lot more affecting.

"The Rise of the Planet of the Apes," co-starring Freida Pinto, Brian Cox, Tom Felton, Andy Serkis and John Lithgow, opens Aug. 5.
