The Chicago Blackhawks watched one of their division rivals make a big trade on Tuesday, as the St. Louis Blues acquired defenseman Justin Faulk from the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Blues also acquired a fifth round pick in the deal, while sending defenseman Joel Edmundson, prospect Dominik Bokk, and a seventh round pick to the Hurricanes.

Finally, the Blues agreed to a seven-year contract extension with Faulk, which will pay him an average of $6.5 million per season.

The move is a big boost to the Blues’ defense, which includes Alex Pietrangelo and Colton Parayko.

In 82 games with the Hurricanes last season, Faulk had 11 goals and dished out 24 assists while posting a plus-9 rating. He has 85 career goals in 559 career NHL games.

The Blackhawks also added a defenseman from the Hurricanes over the offseason, acquiring Calvin de Haan earlier this summer. The Blackhawks sent Anton Forsberg and Gustav Forsling to the Hurricanes in the trade.
