Chicago sports fans have gotten to experience a lot of special days in the city’s long and colorful athletic history, and Monday has the potential to be one for the memory banks.

Naturally, a good chunk of the city will be abuzz with the sweet sounds of playoff baseball, as the Chicago Cubs will continue their World Series title defense in Game 3 of the National League Division Series at Wrigley Field.

The game serves as the perfect first course for a day full of action, as Jose Quintana and the Cubs look to knock off the mighty Max Scherzer and the Washington Nationals in what will be a pivotal game in the narrative of this NLDS.

As the Cubs wrap up their day on the North Side, the Chicago Blackhawks will then take the stage in their first road game of the season. The Blackhawks are off to a 2-0 start this season, and they’ve already set a slew of records thanks to their incredible goal scoring ability.

The team scored a club-record 10 goals in their season opening win over the Pittsburgh Penguins, and they’ve scored a staggering 15 goals through their first two games. Their opponent Monday, the Toronto Maple Leafs, have also scored 15 goals, setting the stage for what could be a fireworks-filled game between two dynamic offenses in the Great White North.

As the Blackhawks toil away in the second period of the titanic clash with Toronto, the Chicago Bears will hit the gridiron to start a whole new era in their history. Second-overall pick Mitchell Trubisky will make his regular season debut for the Bears, stepping into the quarterback spot that has long been a point of contention, and derision, for Bears fans of all ages.

Trubisky is the great new hope, the potential savior of a franchise that seemingly hasn’t found its footing since Brian Urlacher was roaming the field and terrorizing offenses. The rookie quarterback has fans dreaming of something bigger, as his accurate and powerful arm, combined with his incredible mobility in the pocket, make him one of the most exciting young players to put on a helmet and shoulder pads in the City of Big Shoulders.

With such a full plate, it’s a good time to remember just how fortunate Chicago fans can be. With teams in every sport, and with several of those teams having gone through periods of prolonged dominance, Chicago has had its fair share of victory and delight, while also experiencing the humbling lows that the sports world can ultimately bring.

That combination of success and failure makes days like Monday incredibly special. This town has given sports fans a lot over the years, and Monday is yet another Christmas morning. At 3:08 p.m., it will be time to finally start opening those presents.
