Chicago Blackhawks fans have gotten to see first-hand what bad engravings look like, but goaltender Robin Lehner got to experience that for himself when his William Masterton Memorial Trophy arrived in the mail.
Lehner, who signed a free agent contract with the Blackhawks over the offseason, won the Masterton last season after overcoming alcoholism and bipolar disorder, but when he got his trophy from the NHL, there was a slight mistake:
Lehner was a stand-out goaltender for the New York Islanders last season, but his trophy engraving read “Rangers” instead, prompting him to send a simple message to the engravers: “you had one job.”
Blackhawks fans are all too familiar with engraving mistakes on trophies. Back in 2010 when the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup for the first time in 49 years, the list of team names featured one very prominent mistake, as Kris Versteeg’s name was spelled “Vertseeg” on the chalice. The typo was ultimately corrected, but images of it still occasionally float around the internet, taking their place in the lore of the famous trophy.
