The Chicago Blackhawks are exploring a wide variety of options as they head into trade deadline season, but it sounds like one of their longest-tenured veterans doesn’t want to go anywhere.
According to Sportsnet, defenseman Brent Seabrook was asked if he would be willing to waive his no-trade clause to be dealt ahead of the Feb. 25 deadline, and the veteran blue liner declined, indicating that he wants to stay in Chicago.
Seabrook, who signed an eight-year contract after the 2014-15 season, has a full no-movement clause, meaning that he cannot be traded or sent down to the minors without his approval.
The defenseman isn’t the only veteran Blackhawks star to be approached about waiving a no-trade clause. Reports this week indicated that Duncan Keith will also be asked about his future, with the team trying to determine whether he wants to be traded to a contender or to remain with the team.
The Blackhawks are trying to clear roster space and salary cap room ahead of the stretch run and offseason, potentially giving themselves some financial flexibility to land a big-time free agent in Chicago.
