Jonathan Toews Nominated for Mark Messier Leadership Award

The Chicago Blackhawks have won two Stanley Cup championships and have made the playoffs in all seven seasons that Jonathan Toews has been the team’s captain, and his leadership was recognized again on Monday night as he was announced as a nominee for the Mark Messier Leadership Award.

The 2014-15 season marks the third consecutive season that Toews has been nominated for the award, which is given to the player that “exemplifies great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice, during the regular season.” Daniel Alfredsson beat out Toews for the trophy in 2013, and Dustin Brown won the award in 2014.

This season, Toews faces some stiff competition, as former Blackhawk and current Winnipeg Jets captain Andrew Ladd joins Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf as nominees.

The winner of the award will be announced at the NHL Awards ceremony in Las Vegas, which will take place on June 24.

Toews had one of the best offensive seasons of his career, with 28 goals and 38 assists in 81 games. He has also been great so far in the playoffs, with nine points in eight games.
