John Martinez, 25, was charged Thursday with aggravated battery to a child and domestic battery, according to police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak.

Martinez, who is 5-feet 10-inches and 315 pounds, allegedly struck the 6-year-old in the head with his fist, causing severe head trauma, Kubiak said.

The boy, who lived with his mother and Martinez, was taken to Children’s Memorial Hospital where he underwent emergency brain surgery. He also suffered visible bruising to his face, arms and chest, Kubiak said.

This was Martinez’ first arrest, according to Kubiak.

Grand Central Area detectives are investigating.
