Mom, Driver Charged After 2-Year-Old Gets Towed In Car

A South Side mother and a tow truck driver were arrested Monday after the woman's car was towed with her 2-year-old child inside.

Felicia Nwankwo, 36, parked her car in a laundromat parking lot on South Commercial Avenue with her toddler in the back seat while she went to a nearby restaurant to pick up food.

A tow truck driver, Naji Al Zaareir, took the vehicle to a towing yard about 15 miles away with the child still inside.

He was arrested at the tow yard after he contacted police to say he had found the child sleeping in a safety seat in the car, a police report said. He is accused of failure to inspect the vehicle prior to towing it.

Both he and Nwankwo were charged with misdemeanor endangerment of the health and welfare of a child.

The child was taken to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center for evaluation.
