Man Stabbed By Ex Dies In Police Custody

A man who was stabbed by his ex-girlfriend after allegedly breaking into her house Thursday and attacking her and another person died Monday while in the custody of the Cook County Sheriff’s police.

Lashawn Alexander, 35, of South Michigan Avenue, was pronounced dead Monday evening at St. Anthony Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Alexander had been in police custody since May 7 when he was arrested after the alleged break-in and assault, according to sheriff’s spokesman Steve Patterson.

At some point during the alleged attack, the ex-girlfriend grabbed a knife and stabbed Alexander five times. He was taken to a Blue Island hospital in the custody of sheriff’s police, Patterson said.

On Monday, Alexander was being transferred from MetroSouth Medical Center to the jail’s Cermak Hospital when sheriff’s police authorities noticed he was unresponsive and tried to administer CPR. He was then taken to St. Anthony Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Bond for Alexander had been set at $150,000, according to Patterson. What he was charged with was not known immediately.

Details about the break-in and stabbing were also not immediately available and it was not clear whether the girlfriend was also arrested.

An autopsy is scheduled for later Tuesday.

Cook County Sheriff’s police are investigating.
