Child, Adult Hurt When Metra Hits Their Van

A child and an adult were hurt this morning when the minivan in which they were riding was struck by a Metra train on Chicago's Far South Side.

The two were taken to local hospitals, the child in serious-to-critical condition and the adult in good condition, said Fire Department Chief Joe Roccasalva.  He said no one aboard the train, which was deadheading to Joliet, was hurt.

The train hit the minivan about 7:50 a.m. at 97th Street and Vincennes Avenue in the Longwood Manor neighborhood, authorities said.

No passengers were on the train at the time, Metra spokesman Tom Miller said. The empty train was heading south to Joliet to become an inbound train when it hit a car on the tracks, he said.

The crash was not expected to disrupt morning commuter service, he said.
