88-Year-Old Killed in Crash Near His Home

An elderly man was killed in a Thursday crash just a block from his northwest suburban home.

A 2003 Cadillac, driven by Vito A. Giannelli, 88, stopped a Park Ridge stop sign, then proceeded into busy intersection, where the driver’s side was struck by the front end of an approaching 2008 Nissan.

Giannelli was extricated from his vehicle by Park Ridge Fire Department paramedics and transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead at 5:43 p.m., according to a Cook County Medical Examiner’s office spokesman.

The driver of the second vehicle was not injured, according to police.
