4 Chicago Companies Make List of Best Places to Work

The best places to work in 2014 include four companies in Chicago, according to jobs community and anonymous review website Glassdoor.

Based on feedback from those who work there, Windy City-based Orbitz Worldwide ranked ninth of the top 50 U.S. employers, Glassdoor reports. On a five-point scale, with five being very satisfied, Orbitz snagged a 4.3-point score.

Locally based public relations firm Edelman followed close behind at No. 12 with a 4.2 score. Hyatt popped up next at No. 26 with 4 points, then CareerBuilder at No. 37 and 3.8 points. This marks CareerBuilder's sixth straight year on the list.

The findings were part of Glassdoor's sixth annual Employees’ Choice Awards, determined from comments shared by employees over the past year.

What makes them the best?

"Shared themes among this year’s top 50 companies," Glassdoor notes, "include a mission-driven company culture, great colleagues, challenging work environments, career opportunities and workplace perks, such as free food and flexible schedules."

The top five best places to work across the country are Bain & Company, Twitter, LinkedIn, Eastman Chemical and Facebook, which saw its ranking fall from No. 1 last year.

Companies that made their debut on the list include Twitter, Disney and Chick-fil-A.
