Attorney: Hurd Didn't Sell Drugs to NFL Players

Sam Hurd's attorney on Friday categorically denied unsubstantiated reports his client supplied drugs to NFL players.

"He 100 percent denies that allegation. It is patently and totally false," attorney Brett Greenfield said after Hurd appeared in court for a bond hearing. "It just didn't happen."

As Hurd appeared in court, the Bears cut him from the team following his Wednesday arrest. Prosecutors said the former wide receiver accepted a kilo of cocaine from an undercover federal agent he thought was a supplier. They say Hurd hoped to set up a drug distribution network in the area.

Following court Friday, Greenfield characterized his client's state of mind and defended his character.

"Sam is very calm. Sam is very positive. Sam is very confident," said Greenfield. "Sam's a father. Sam's a husband. He's a good teammate. He's a good friend, and the past is the best predictor of the future."

Hurd's case now moves to federal court in northern Texas, where the investigation began. Greenfield said he expects Hurd will need to make his initial appearance there within the next 30 days.

Hurd has been charged with intention to conspire to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine, which could get him up to 40 years in prison and a $5 million fine.
