Mike Davis Claimed on Waivers by Panthers, Report Says

After he was waived by the Chicago Bears, running back Mike Davis has reportedly found a new NFL home.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Davis was claimed on waivers by the Carolina Panthers after being released by the Bears over the weekend:

According to Rapoport, Davis will primarily be used to give running back Christian McCaffrey some additional rest down the stretch.

After signing Davis to a two-year, $6 million deal over the offseason, the Bears scarcely used the running back, giving him just 11 total carries for 25 yards. He had seven receptions for the Bears, with six of those coming in the team’s Week 1 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

By placing Davis on waivers, the Bears could potentially earn a compensatory pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. The Bears currently have zero picks in the first, third, and fourth rounds of the draft, and with the release of Davis and the departure of safety Adrian Amos in free agency, the team could potentially earn a fourth-round pick from the NFL when compensatory picks are awarded after the Super Bowl.

The Bears have not been awarded a compensatory pick since 2009, the longest such drought in the NFL.
