Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon is getting ready for his fourth season in the Windy City, and he shared his thoughts on the newest member of the city’s coaching fraternity.

During his annual Thanksmas event, Maddon gave praise to new Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy, who like Maddon is from Pennsylvania and took an interesting route to get to his dream job.

“I’m looking forward to meeting him,” Maddon said. “(He’s an) interesting fellow, and comes with a great pedigree. It sounds like the crazy stuff that I’ve done. It’s good to see a Pennsylvania boy get an opportunity.”

Nagy, who sold real estate while he was serving as a low-tier assistant under Andy Reid in Philadelphia, also played quarterback in the Arena Football League before becoming a hotshot coaching candidate thanks to his work in Kansas City.

Even as Maddon praised Nagy’s path to success, he also expressed sympathy for former head coach John Fox, who was fired last week.

“I like John Fox a lot,” he said. “I had good conversations with him, and I’ve already reached out to him and to his family.”

Maddon remains the second longest-tenured coach in Chicago, trailing only Blackhawks boss Joel Quenneville in that category.
