Bears Great Says Khalil Mack, Not Brian Urlacher, Best Defensive Player of Last 30 Years

Mack was acquired for two first round picks before the 2018 season

Former Chicago Bears great and Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Hampton is a big fan of defensive star Khalil Mack, and he’s not shy about expressing it.

Hampton, who appeared with Bears management to unveil the team’s plans to celebrate its centennial next year, discussed Mack’s impact on the team with the Chicago Sun-Times, and he invoked the name of another Hall of Famer to do it.

“Khalil Mack is special,” he said. “When I heard the Bears signed him, I said, ‘he’s the best player we’ve had in 30 years.’ No offense to Brian Urlacher, but you’ve seen how he changes the complexion of the defense.”

Invoking the name of Urlacher is no small thing, as the linebacker racked up 11 forced fumbles, 41.5 sacks, and 1,354 tackles in his 13-year NFL career, and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame earlier this year.

In his first season with the Bears, Mack has been a dominant presence all over the field, with seven sacks, 25 total tackles, four forced fumbles, and an interception return for a touchdown.

Mack and the Bears will be looking to back up Hampton’s words on Sunday when they take on the Minnesota Vikings at Soldier Field in a Sunday Night Football game.
