Former Bear Indicted on Federal Drug Charges

Former wide receiver was arrested in December outside a Rosemont steakhouse

Former Chicago Bear Sam Hurd was indicted in Dallas on Wednesday on federal drug charges relating to his arrest last month outside a Chicago-area steakhouse.

Hurd and another man, Toby Lujan, were each charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine, federal officials said.

The indictment -- a formal accusation that someone has committed a crime -- indicates prosecutors are moving forward with the case, but does not include any new allegations that were not already contained in the criminal complaint, which was released after his arrest.

Lujan was allegedly Hurd's dealer, officials said, adding that the men had ongoing discussions about a long-term business relationship.

Hurd was arrested in Rosemont on Dec. 14 after allegedly accepting a kilo of cocaine from an undercover federal agent he thought was a supplier.  Federal officials said Hurd hoped to setup a drug distribution network in the Chicago area.

He was cut from the Chicago Bears two days later. Management said there were no red flags in his background.

Following Hurd's initial bond hearing in Chicago, his Los Angeles-based attorney, Brett Greenfield, categorically denied reports that Hurd supplied drugs to other NFL players.
