Chicago Bears

Bears Fall to Chargers for 3rd Straight Loss

Eddy Piñeiro missed a 41-yard potential game-winning field goal at the horn

The Chicago Bears had a chance to win, but Eddy Piñeiro missed a game-winning kick wide left as Chicago fell to 3-4 on the season.

The Bears drove down the field in the closing seconds of the contest, but decided to allow Piñeiro to have a shot rather than trying to get the ball any closer to the uprights. The kick looked good off the kicker's foot, but drifted wide left, sending Chicago to a defeat.

Mitchell Trubisky threw for 253 yards and an interception in the game, and though he rushed for 11 yards and got the Bears into field goal range, it wasn't enough as Chicago dropped their third straight game.

David Montgomery rushed for a career high 135 yards, including a 55-yard run during the contest. He also scored a touchdown and caught four passes for 12 yards in the losing effort.

For the Chargers, Philip Rivers threw for 201 yards and a touchdown, including the go-ahead score to Austin Ekeler in the fourth quarter. Melvin Gordon led the Chargers with 31 rushing yards and a touchdown as they climbed to 3-5 on the season.

With just over a minute to go in the game, the Bears got the ball back and marched down the field, with Trubisky finding Taylor Gabriel and Allen Robinson for completions. Trubisky then ran for 11 yards with 53 seconds remaining, but following a Chargers' timeout, he took a knee to run down the remainder of the clock.

After the Bears called their final timeout, Piñeiro hit a 41-yard field goal attempt that drifted wide left at the last second, sending the Bears to defeat.

The Bears will try to snap that three-game losing streak next week when they head to Philadelphia for a game against the Eagles.

2:54 p.m.

After forcing a punt from the Chargers, the Bears are driving as Trubisky has completed two key passes and run for a first down. They are well within field goal range, and the Chargers are out of timeouts.

2:46 p.m.

A bad sequence for the Bears as they are forced to punt just before the two-minute warning. Running out of shotgun on 2nd-and-7 and then Trubisky taking a sack on a third down play that took the Bears out of field goal range.

2:30 p.m.

The Chargers now have the lead against the Bears, with Austin Eckler catching a pass in the flat, avoiding a tackle attempt by Danny Trevathan, and crashing across the goal line. 17-16 Los Angeles with eight minutes left in the game.

2:25 p.m.

Trubisky badly overthrows a wide open Taylor Gabriel on what would have been a sure touchdown, then fumbles the ball away and the Chargers recover deep in Chicago territory.

For those keeping track at home, that's now an interception, a short completion, a bad overthrow, and a lost fumble on Trubisky's last four snaps.

2:17 p.m.

The Bears are reeling after Trubisky throws an interception early in the fourth quarter. They had been driving before the throw, but Trubisky slightly underthrew a pass to a covered Trey Burton and it was picked off.

Chargers get the ball near the Bears' 25-yard line.

2:08 p.m.

That was a lightning fast third quarter, and the Bears still lead 16-10 with one quarter to play.

The Chargers moved the ball down the field well thanks to some big completions from Rivers, but much like the Bears in the first half, Los Angeles couldn't score in a goal-to-go situation, settling for a short field goal instead.

1:50 p.m.

The Bears execute a nearly-flawless drive, with Montgomery reeling off several strong runs, Mitchell Trubisky running a beautiful play-action pass out of the I-formation and finding Robinson for a 31-yard gain, and then Montgomery scoring on a four-yard run to the end zone.

The Bears now lead 16-7, and the sun seems to be shining a bit brighter at Soldier Field.

1:29 p.m.

The Bears take a 9-7 lead at halftime and are booed off the field after failing to score on five consecutive goal-to-go plays.

After getting a reprieve thanks to a pass interference penalty, the Bears fail on two separate tries to score from the 1-yard line, then Trubisky is forced to spike the ball as the clock runs down and the Bears are out of timeouts.

Piñeiro boots through the field goal, and the Bears lead, but fans are dissatisfied with the effort.

1:11 p.m.

In the blink of an eye, the Chargers have taken the lead. Philip Rivers throws a deep jump ball to Mike Williams for a 43-yard gain, and on the very next play Melvin Gordon rushes for a 19-yard score and a 7-6 lead just before the two-minute warning.

1:04 p.m.

The Bears once again get into the red zone, but once again are unable to score, as Tarik Cohen is stopped on first and third down runs and Trubisky throws an incomplete pass to Allen Robinson.

Piñeiro makes the field goal, and it's 6-0.

12:39 p.m.

The Bears wrap up the first quarter as Kyle Fuller picks off Philip Rivers, nearly returning the ball to the end zone.

Unfortunately, Chicago's offense can't convert to open the second quarter, as passes to Trey Burton and Adam Shaheen are batted down. Piñeiro drills a field goal, and the Bears are on the board with a 3-0 lead.

12:28 p.m.

The good news: Mitchell Trubisky completes two straight downfield passes to Anthony Miller and Tarik Cohen to get the Bears into the red zone.

The bad news: The drive falters at the end, and Eddy Piñeiro doinks a field goal off the right upright. The game remains scoreless in the first quarter.

12:21 p.m.

The Chargers' offense is continuing to struggle, but the Bears aren't exactly having an easy time of it either, as Joey Bosa is easily beating both Charles Leno and Bobby Massie off the snap.

David Montgomery has been heavily involved in the Bears' game plan so far as they look to get the run game going.

12:12 p.m.

The Bears and Chargers have exchanged unsuccessful drives to start the game. The Chargers went three-and-out, while the Bears got a first down but then were hit with a false start penalty and a pair of broken plays, as the Chargers' front three was able to get pressure despite missing the presence of Justin Jones up the middle.

12:03 p.m.

The Bears, wearing their orange jerseys, will kick off to the Chargers to start the game.

11:30 a.m.

The Chicago Bears will be mostly healthy when they take on the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday afternoon as Sherrick McManis will play after starting the week in the NFL’s concussion protocol.

McManis returned to the practice field on Friday, and he will be available for the Bears when they try to snap a two-game losing streak at Soldier Field.

Among the inactive Bears is tight end Bradley Sowell, who has not appeared in a game for the team since Week 2. Sowell will be joined on the inactive list by wide receiver Riley Ridley, offensive lineman Alex Bars, defensive back Duke Shelley, and linebackers Kevin Pierre-Louis and Josh Woods.

Defensive lineman Brent Urban, whom the Bears signed this week after he was waived by the Tennessee Titans, will also be inactive for the game.

While the Bears are mostly healthy, the Chargers are dealing with some significant injury concerns. While wide receiver Keenan Allen will try to play as he deals with a hamstring injury, defensive tackle Justin Jones will not. Fellow defensive tackle Brandon Mebane will also be out for the Chargers, potentially giving the Bears the ability to run up the middle of the field with impunity as they try to get their anemic run game going for the first time this season.

Running back Justin Jackson will also sit out for the Chargers, as will defensive tackle Cortez Broughton, quarterback Easton Stick and linebacker Jatavis Brown.

Kicker Michael Badgley is also inactive with a groin issue.

The Bears and Chargers will kick things off at noon on the lakefront, and the game will be aired on Fox.
