Bears Bites: Wootton Looks to be Ready by Training Camp

Also, could Phil Emery be more active in free agency than previously thought?

In this edition of Bears Bites, we take a look at who one Chicago sportswriter thinks the Bears should take in the first round of the draft, a quarterback from Eastern Illinois University that is looking to become the next Tony Romo, and a Bears player who is hoping to be ready for training camp as he is potentially looking for a new team.

-We start out with Adam Hoge’s latest mock draft, updated with all sorts of information from the NFL Combine. He not only discusses who the Bears should take with the 14th overall pick in the draft (DT Aaron Donald out of Pittsburgh), but also the other needs that the team will have to address in May’s draft. -Former Eastern Illinois quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo participated in Northwestern’s pro day, and in talking with NFL head coaches Bill O’Brien and Jim Harbaugh, he expressed a desire to compete at the highest level. [Daily Herald]

-Could the Bears actually be active in free agency? They may not be able to go for the big fish in the pond, but thanks to some creativity that could be exercised with the contracts of Jay Cutler (pro-rate his first year’s salary) and Julius Peppers (cut him with June 1st designation), Phil Emery could be a bit more active than some people think. -Corey Wootton, who had offseason surgery, will be a free agent when it begins on March 11th, and even though there is a chance he could remain a Bear, the defensive lineman is confident that he will make an impact on his team, whoever it might be. [Chicago Sun-Times]

-The Bears re-signed Roberto Garza last week, but they gave themselves some nice protection in clauses built into the contract. [Chicago Tribune]

-The NFL has reportedly reinstated Seattle Seahawks cornerback Brandon Browner after suspending him indefinitely for testing positive for a banned substance. The corner will be a free agent when March 11th hits. [Shutdown Corner]
