Maison Kayser Opens First U.S. Bakery and Cafe in New York City

The New York food scene is pretty serious, seriously good. You can find just about any type of cuisine here that beats most cities' best. But, the thing that has been lacking is the cafe scene, especially uptown, a spot that you can drop in, grab a coffee, a (good) croissant, or a (good) baguette. Notice that "good" is the key word here. Finding these seemingly simple baked goods is actually quite a feat. Eric Kayser has alleviated this foodie issue with the much anticipated opening of Maison Kayser, the first U.S. outpost of the popular bakery.

Having been opened for a little over a week, the news is quickly trickling around the neighborhood that the French have invaded… in a great way. Maison Kayser is divided into two sections, an over-the-counter bakery area serving their famous breads, croissants, macarons, tarts, coffee and more (no seating), and the cafe area that's waiter-service only.

The cafe offers a surprisingly extensive lunch and dinner menu, with everything from a variety of sandwiches to foie gras hors d' oeuvres to steak tartare to a classic frisee au lardons and croque-monsieur. But if you're simply in the mood for a pastry and coffee, the friendly and attentive Breton-striped-clad French waitstaff will gladly seat you.

We do wish, however, that there were a few tables in the bakery area to accommodate those just looking for a quick pain au chocolat and latte, wanting to stay long enough for a quick Twitter peruse. But, we'll take what we can get, for now.

While the cafe and bakery are still slightly hidden behind some scaffolding, look for the adorable orange bicycles outside… or the delighted Upper East Siders lingering in front peering in the windows to see what all the hype is about.
