The Bears were facing fourth-and-1 from Green Bay’s 14-yard line when Williams faked a handoff and rolled to his left. Tight end Cole Kmet had gotten behind Nixon in the end zone, but Nixon made a leaping catch of the underthrown pass.

Josh Jacobs scored the tiebreaking touchdown on a 2-yard run with 3:32 remaining as the Packers (9-3-1) won their fourth straight and snapped a five-game winning streak by the Bears (9-4).

Packers coach Matt LaFleur improved his record against the Bears to 12-1, the lone loss coming in the final week of the 2024 regular season. It came in his first head-to-head matchup with rookie Bears coach Ben Johnson.

During his introductory news conference, Johnson said, “to be quite frank with you, I kind of enjoyed beating Matt LaFleur twice a year.” Johnson was Detroit’s offensive coordinator last season when the Lions swept the Packers.

LaFleur declined to comment on that remark before Sunday’s game, but Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich said, “you take it personal, for sure. I’ll just leave it at that.”

Green Bay’s Jordan Love went 17 of 25 for 234 yards with three touchdowns — two to Christian Watson and one to Bo Melton — and one interception. Williams was 19 of 35 for 186 yards with two touchdowns and the pick.

Jacobs set up his go-ahead touchdown with a spectacular 21-yard run.

The Packers were facing third-and-2 from Chicago’s 28 when Love pitched right to Jacobs. Chicago’s Montez Sweat, Gervon Dexter, D’Marco Jackson and Jaylon Johnson were all converging on Jacobs behind the line of scrimmage.

Jacobs somehow got through all of them and raced 21 yards before Kevin Byard finally brought him down. Jacobs then scored with a physical run up the middle on third-and-goal.

That still left plenty of time for Williams, who has orchestrated five fourth-quarter comebacks this year. He got Chicago into scoring position with completions of 27 yards to Luther Burden and 24 yards to Devin Duvernay.

Chicago faced third-and-1 from the 14 when Kingsley Enagbare stuffed Kyle Monangai for no gain. That set up the game-sealing interception.

After getting outscored 14-3 and outgained 207 yards to 71 in the first half, Chicago rallied to tie it with two touchdowns and a field goal on its first three second-half possessions. Williams threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Olamide Zaccheaus and Cairo Santos kicked a 41-yard field goal in the third quarter.

The tying touchdown came when Williams floated a 1-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Colston Loveland on third-and-goal with eight minutes left. That capped a 17-play, 83-yard drive lasting over 8 1/2 minutes.

During the second quarter of Sunday’s game at Lambeau Field, Monangai lowered his helmet and slammed into Packers linebacker Edgerrin Cooper, causing a big reaction in the stadium.

The replay showed the remarkable scene as a piece of Cooper’s helmet went flying from the force of the impact.

Monangai’s helmet also showed some scarring during the game, with a piece of the “C” on the side of the helmet going missing.

Needless to say, things were pretty cold in Green Bay, with wind chills in the single-digits and air temperatures in the teens for the divisional game.

It was also one of the only highlights of the first half for the Bears, as they trailed 14-3 at the break.

The Feast of our Lady of Guadalupe will take place over two days this week in Des Plaines, drawing hundreds of thousands of people.

Some of the faithful have expressed concerns about attending given the recent immigration enforcement in the Chicago area, but Father Esequiel Sanchez is still getting ready to welcome Catholics around the world for the special celebration.

“We continue to the celebrations of course the circumstances are a little bit different with the weather and all kinds of other things,” he said.

The two-day celebration will feature numerous masses and cultural events, all commemorating the Virgin Mary’s apparition to Saint Juan Diego in 1531. During this time, faithful Catholics pray to her for blessings, guidance, and protection.

Sanchez said the pilgrimage has already started.

“A pilgrim doesn’t only concern his own needs or her own needs,” he said. “We’re concerned about our people all of us we’re praying for our nation we’re praying for all of us.”

Given the recent immigration enforcement, Sanchez believes it’s going to have an effect on turnout.

“Many immigrants and many stripes come here, and they all expressed their concerns they’re absolutely terrified,” he said.

One woman told Telemundo Chicago she’s skipping out the celebrations this year in person. Just yesterday federal agents clashed with residents in Elgin.

Witnesses reported that agents deployed tear gas and pepper spray resulting in 7 people being treated for chemical exposure. Police said they received about 30 calls related to the operation.

“We’re praying that whatever hostility there are politically, they can be healed,” he said. “That parties have to speak we can’t do this—we can’t do this like that.”

While Sanchez knows that some people may be too scared to attend in person, he said mass will be streamed online. He reassured attendees that agents will not be allowed on church grounds without a warrant.

When asked about possible enforcement during the religious gathering, DHS in a statement told NBC Chicago in part, “ICE does not raid churches—regardless of it is a holiday season or not.”

The Fighting Irish went 10-2 on the season, winning their final 10 games of the season, but they watched as Alabama and Miami each made the 12-team field, leading to their decision to opt out of bowl game consideration.

“As a team, we’ve decided to withdraw our name from consideration for a bowl game following the 2025 season,” a statement from the university read. “We appreciate all the support from our families and fans, and we’re hoping to bring the 12^th national title to South Bend in 2026.”

The Fighting Irish lost their first two games of the regular season to Miami and Texas A&M, both of whom made the playoff field that was announced on Sunday morning.

After that, the Irish won 10 consecutive games, including blowout wins over ranked USC and Pitt, to go 10-2 on the regular season.

Notre Dame ended up with the 11^th spot in the final College Football Playoff rankings, but it wasn’t enough to earn a spot in the 12-team field as Sun Belt-champion James Madison and American-champion Tulane each won spots thanks to their conference championships.

Iowa State and Kansas State, both of whom are hiring new coaches for next season, have also declined to participate in bowl games, and will be fined by the NCAA.

It was not immediately clear if Notre Dame would be assessed a fine for not participating in a bowl game.

Ed Bambas, an 88-year-old veteran who works full-time at a Meijer outside of Detroit, was given an oversized check for a whopping $1.77 million, which was the result of an extraordinary fundraising effort by a social media influencer.

During his visit to the U.S., influencer Samuel Weidenhofer visited the Meijer store in Brighton where Bambas is employed and recorded a video for his 7.7 million TikTok followers. In the footage, Bambas shared why he continues to work, explaining that he retired as a salaried employee from General Motors in 1999, but in 2012, he lost his pension due to the company’s bankruptcy measures.

The Old General Motors offered lump-sum payments to about 42,000 retirees and their surviving beneficiaries that year, as they aimed to cut 24 percent from their U.S. pension obligation, NBC News reported at the time. NBC Chicago has not been able to confirm if Bambas was a part of those offerings.

Bambas’ life changed dramatically in the years after losing his pension when his wife became ill, he took on the role as her caregiver and medical bills began piling up.

“The thing that hurt me the most was when my wife was really sick, and when they took the pension, they also took the health care coverage and all but like $10,000 of my life insurance,” he shared.

So, he sold the house, the property they had and “made it through.”

Bambas said his wife died seven years ago, and since then, he has been trying to reestablish himself.

The veteran hoped to live a little of the life he was hoping for, but he hasn’t had enough money to do so and instead has needed to work eight hours a day, five days a week to make ends meet.

Thanks to the power of social media and the generosity of strangers – that won’t be the case much longer.

Weidenhofer, who is traveling the world to help make a difference for those in need, launched an online GoFundMe campaign, urging people to help Bambas.

The response was overwhelming, with more than 15,000 people donating anywhere between $10 and $10,000.

In its first day, the fundraiser generated more than $800,000. By Friday, that number climbed to more than $1.7 million.

Weidenhofer’s efforts began after a message from Lexi Wallace, 26, who used to be a regular customer at the Meijer store before moving away; she went on the influencer’s Facebook page and urged him to find the beloved grocery store worker.

“I thought his name was Bob. He never corrected me,” Wallace said. “I would love going to Meijer to see him.”

Bambas and Weidenhofer met again on Friday, where the Australian influencer said he had a “little surprise.”

It was anything but, however.

Weidenhofer revealed everything he and his followers had raised in what he said was one of the largest individual fundraisers in GoFundMe history.

“If you want, you will be able to retire, because we’ve raised you $1.77 million,” he said.

 “Thank you. Oh, my God,” Bambas said as he wiped away tears and sniffles.

“It’s something that dreams are made of, trust me,” the 88-year-old said.

When it comes to his cashier post, Bambas isn’t leaving just yet.

“I’ll probably work another month or two and shut things down,” he shared.

The school announced Sunday that they will take on the Tennessee Volunteers in the Music City Bowl later this month.

That bowl game is played at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, home of the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, and will be contested on Tuesday, December 30 at 4:30 p.m. Central, according to bowl organizers.

The game marks the third straight Illinois has played against an SEC opponent, following up last year’s Citrus Bowl against South Carolina.

That game marked the first time in school history that Illinois had beaten an SEC team, as they knocked off the Gamecocks 21-17 in Orlando last year.

The Illini also played an SEC school in the 2023 ReliaQuest Bowl, falling to Mississippi State.

Illinois has appeared in bowl games in each of the last three seasons, racking up an 8-4 record this season after having College Football Playoff aspirations prior to the season.

The Volunteers also went 8-4 on the regular season, dropping their final game against Vanderbilt in Nashville.

Gordon, who returned for the Bears in last week’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles after missing more than a month, suffered a groin injury during pregame warmups and was scratched from the lineup, according to the team.

The Bears’ secondary had already been dealt an injury blow during the week, as Tyrique Stevenson was ruled out for the second consecutive game due to injury.

Gordon has appeared in three games this season, with one fumble recovery, seven tackles and one quarterback hit this season.

The data, which includes ICE arrests from Jan. 20 to Oct. 15, shows that nearly 75,000 people with no criminal records have been swept up in immigration operations that the president and his top officials have said would target murderers, rapists and gang members.

“It contradicts what the administration has been saying about people who are convicted criminals and that they are going after the worst of the worst,” said Ariel Ruiz Soto, senior policy analyst at the Migration Policy Institute.

The figures provide the most revealing look to date into the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown. They were shared by the University of California, Berkeley’s Deportation Data Project, which obtained them through a lawsuit brought against Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The data is compiled by an internal ICE office that handles arrest, detention and deportation data. The administration stopped regularly posting detailed information on ICE arrests in January.

For arrestees with criminal histories, the data doesn’t distinguish between those with a history of minor offenses and those who have committed more serious crimes, like rape and murder, whom the administration has said it is targeting.

And the figures do not include arrests made by Border Patrol, which has launched aggressive immigration operations in several cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles and Charlotte, North Carolina. Border Patrol sweeps are currently underway in New Orleans.

Border Patrol and ICE are both under the Department of Homeland Security but they are two different agencies with two different missions. Border Patrol agents typically operate along the southern and northern borders, but recently hundreds have been sent into the interior of the United States to track down undocumented immigrants.

“That is the black box that we know nothing about,” Ruiz Soto said. “How many arrests is Border Patrol doing? How many of those are leading to removals and under what conditions?”

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment.

ICE field offices have been under intense pressure to ramp up arrests.

‘I kind of feel betrayed': Green card interviews end in handcuffs for military spouses

In mid-May, White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller threatened to fire senior ICE officials if they did not begin arresting at least 3,000 migrants per day, NBC News previously reported.

But the new data shows that ICE is still falling well short of those targets.

ICE agents have made an average daily total of 824 arrests since Jan. 20, according to the data. Those figures are still more than double the average daily arrest total under the Biden administration in 2024, when ICE arrested 312 people per day.

The data also reveals that about 90% of the people ICE arrested through mid-October were male. Mexican nationals accounted for the largest share of the overall arrests, with about 85,000, followed by nationals of Guatemala at 31,000 and Honduras at 24,000.

More than 60% of those who were arrested were between the ages of 25 and 45.

“Now we’re really feeling that pain in the workforce,” said George Carrillo, chief executive officer of the Hispanic Construction Council.

Carrillo praised the Trump administration for its efforts to secure the border but said the ongoing enforcement operations are having a significant impact on companies that employ migrant workers.

“Now even the most conservative Republicans are feeling it and understanding that, hey, something different has to be done because now it is affecting their businesses,” he said. “And they’re worried about this strategy.”

It’s not clear from the data how many of those who were arrested were deported, but 22,959 are listed under the category of “voluntary departure,” meaning they left the United States of their own accord.

ICE is currently holding 65,000 migrants in detention centers around the country, according to DHS data posted online.

The two teams are not only getting ready to play their 211^th regular season game against one another, the most any two teams have played against each other in the NFL, but they are doing so under remarkable circumstances.

The Bears come into the game with a 9-3 record on the season, having won nine of their last 10 games to jump to the top of the NFC standings. The Packers are right on their tails, with an 8-3-1 record on the regular season.

Sunday’s game will obviously mark a critical point in the NFC North standings, as the winning team will jump into the lead of the division, but it will also represent a remarkable milestone for the two clubs.

According to NFL Network, the Packers and Bears have never met this late in an NFL season with both teams being five games or better about the .500 mark.

The Packers recently had their 11-game winning streak against the Bears snapped, but still lead the all-time series between the teams with a 108-96-6 record against Chicago.

The Packers and Bears have split their two postseason meetings, with the Packers winning the most recent playoff contest as they triumphed in the 2011 NFC Championship Game.

The latest entry into the rivalry will begin at 3:25 p.m. on Fox.

According to the National Weather Service’s Space Weather Prediction Center, a geomagnetic storm watch has been issued for Tuesday after a powerful coronal mass ejection was reported this weekend.

That CME is projected to arrive in Earth’s atmosphere on Tuesday, meaning that the Northern Lights could be visible far south of their usual ranges.

The peak of the storm could be classified as a G3, or “strong,” geomagnetic storm, according to the SWPC.

A geomagnetic storm rated as a G3 on the scale typically produces a Planetary K-index level of seven, which could theoretically make the Northern Lights visible as far south as Illinois and Oregon, according to the SWPC.

It’s unclear what time the bulk of the solar storm will arrive at Earth, which would impact whether the Northern Lights would be visible across parts of the continguous U.S., including the Chicago area.

In order to maximize chances of seeing the Northern Lights in such a scenario, residents would be urged to find a place with a clear view of the northern sky and one away from city lights, while allowing their eyes to adjust to the darkness for at least 15 minutes. Cameras can also pick up on the Northern Lights more than the naked eye in those situations.

Bears wide receiver Rome Odunze had already been ruled out with a foot injury, as had defensive back Tyrique Stevenson, who is dealing with a hip issue.

Linebacker Ruben Hyppolite also won’t play as he has a shoulder ailment.

Dominique Robinson, who had been cleared to return to action after missing last week’s game with a concussion, was a health scratch from the lineup.

Defensive tackle Jonathan Ford and quarterback Case Keenum were also inactive for the game.

The Bears will get back linebacker TJ Edwards and linebacker Noah Sewell after both players were absent from the field in recent weeks, giving the team a boost to their defense.

Packers wide receiver Matthew Golden, who missed three of the last four games for the team, will be active, as will Jayden Reed, who has been activated from injured reserve.

Cornerback Nate Hobbs is also coming back from injury and will be active.

Wide receiver Savion Williams is out with a foot injury, with Donovan Jennings, Quinton Bohanna, Lukas Van Ness and Nazir Stackhouse also inactive for the Packers.

Kickoff is set for 3:25 p.m., and the game will air on Fox.

Those impacts included snow-covered roads, but also included flight delays at O’Hare, as a ground stop was issued Sunday morning for flights arriving in the region.

The big story was once again the snow, which fell in heavy bursts overnight, especially in parts of the area north of Chicago.

Police were called to the 11400 block of South Davol Avenue around 1 a.m., where they found two men, 18 and 35, in an altercation, Chicago police said in a statement.

Officers attempted to separate the two when the older man’s gun went off, striking an officer and the younger man.

The officer was shot in the chest, and a second officer returned shots, striking both men.

The younger man was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, and the older man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center. Both were listed in fair condition.

The injured officer was treated at a nearby hospital and released. The protective vest he was wearing at the time saved his life, police said.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the incident.

According to the National Weather Service, some parts of the area received more than six inches of snow overnight, with seven inches of snow falling in Lindenhurst, six inches falling in northwest Indiana, and four inches of snow falling in the city of Chicago.

That snow is expected to slowly taper off during the morning hours Sunday, though lake-effect snow could still impact northwest Indiana into the late morning and early afternoon.

Temperatures are expected to gradually decrease throughout the day, remaining in the mid-to-upper 20s during the daylight hours before dropping into the teens overnight into Monday, according to forecast models.

Partly-to-mostly cloudy skies are expected Monday in the Chicago area, but another quick-moving clipper system could deliver a dusting of snow overnight Monday and into Tuesday, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.

Tuesday will see temperatures rise above the freezing mark across the area, with readings climbing into the upper-30s for much of the region. Those temps will be accompanied by another system moving through the region, causing rain or mixed precipitation Tuesday evening.

More rain could fall Wednesday, though it is expected that the precipitation will eventually transition to snow as temperatures dip for the back half of the work week, according to forecast models.

By Thursday, the precipitation is expected to clear out of the region, and temperatures are expected to be on the chilly side Friday, with readings in the low-20s for several days.

Starting at midnight Saturday, a winter weather advisory is in effect through 9 a.m. Sunday for Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and northern Will counties.

The snowfall will be moderate to heavy at times, according to NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack. As the snow continues, temperatures will drop into the low-to-mid 20s.

Conditions are expected to be clear until midnight Saturday, followed by several hours of snowfall through Sunday morning that could drop between 2 to 5 inches of snow.

Salt spreaders and plows will be out across the region in response to the weather system.

More than 220 Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation salt spreaders will be deployed overnight through the morning to “ensure roads are safe and passable,” the department said.

“Please allow extra time and drive according to conditions, leaving ample space between vehicles,” DSS said in a statement.

Evanston, where between 2 to 4 inches of snowfall is expected, requested residents comply with the snow parking ban on main thoroughfares so crews can clear the streets.

Farther south, near the I-88 corridor, snowfall rates of roughly 1 inch per hour are expected for several hours overnight Saturday, according to NWS.

By Sunday afternoon, the clouds are expected to clear out and the region will see sunshine, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.

A second round of snow could come late Tuesday, followed by the possibility of additional snow showers on Wednesday, according to NBC Chicago Meteorologist Iisha Scott.

Docked at Navy Pier, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw arrived earlier this week with a load of 1,200 fresh Christmas trees for families who might otherwise not have one.

“All the people who volunteered this morning on a chilly morning, to come and make sure it could get to their homes. It’s a beautiful tradition, and a wonderful reminder of everything we are about as human beings,” Noem said at the event.

Noem did not address ongoing DHS operations, including ICE and Border Patrol raids and President Trump’s mass deportation plan.

Protestors attended the event, some with signs — including one that read “Trees for families not props for politicians.”

Her appearance came on the same day as federal agents deployed tear gas and pepper spray during an immigration operation in suburban Elgin.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson responded to Noem’s visit during a Christmas winter coat giveaway event Saturday in Chicago’s Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood.

“Under the Trump administration, food has been cut off, access to health care. His presence through his administration has created a great deal of consternation and anxiety,” Johnsons said. “We’re doing our part in Chicago to lead by example.”

Around 10:07 a.m., Des Plaines police said their officers responded to a crash involving two cars on the 1700 block of Mannheim Road.

Leonard Moore, 48, was driving a United States Postal Service truck southbound on Mannheim Road when he drifted into the northbound lanes and struck a vehicle driven by Laurie Jensen of Mount Prospect.

Moore claimed he temporarily lost control of the vehicle, causing him to strike Jensen’s vehicle, a 2005 Chrysler Sebring, police said.

Both drivers were taken to a local hospital.

Jensen, 65, died from her injuries at the hospital, authorities said.

Moore was issued a citation for improper lane usage and is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. Jan. 16 at the Skokie Courthouse, police said.

The incident remains under investigation.

No additional information was immediately available.

Around 9:15 a.m., Elgin Police Department was contacted by a federal agent to report that they were involved in a traffic crash on the 1600 block of West Highland Avenue. Police said the agent reported the crash occurred during immigration enforcement activities in the area and a person fled from one of the vehicles involved in the crash toward Maple Lane.

Police said they generated a report for the crash and cleared the scene.

Shortly after, around 10 a.m., police said they received a report that masked people were on a property on the 1600 block of Maple Lane stating they had a warrant. Police said they responded to the area, found federal law enforcement agents on scene, and cleared the area.

Then, around 12:22 p.m., a several reports of shots fired on the 1600 block of South Maple involving federal agents were made to police. Elgin officers who responded to the area determined no shots were fired; however, they did find that the federal agents had dispersed chemical irritants.

As of 3 p.m., live streamed video on social media showed agents and a large crowd still present on the 1600 block of South Maple.

Video posted to social media from neighbors and witnesses show a large crowd gathering around the federal agents, including many who were displaying firearms.

A person can be seen laying face-down on the snow-covered ground while several federal agents attempt to physically restrain them. Video also showed at least one person that gathered at the scene throwing snowballs at the agents on top of the man, and in return agents can be seen then deploying tear gas at the crowd.

Other videos showed agents spraying pepper spray and many showed several canisters of tear gas releasing chemicals into the air in the area.

Seven people were treated by police for exposure to the chemical irritants with the help of Elgin Fire Department and released on scene, authorities said.  

The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to NBC Chicago’s request for comment.

Witnesses claimed in posts on social media that at least one person was detained by the agents, however, that information was not confirmed by police or Homeland Security.

Approximately 30 calls were placed to the Elgin police department’s emergency communications center regarding the incidents, police said.

“The Elgin Police Department will continue to respond to any calls for service and determine the appropriate action within the parameters of the Illinois Trust Act which prohibits Elgin officers from assisting with federal immigration enforcement operations,” police said in a post on Facebook.

The immigration activity comes weeks after federal operations in the Chicago area began slowing down following over two months of aggressive enforcement termed “Operation Midway Blitz.”

On Nov. 14, North Chicago officials said Department of Homeland Security left the staging base they had used for almost two months at the Naval Station Great Lakes, and Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino left Chicago for “Operation Charlotte’s Web” in Charlotte, North Carolina.

However, when asked if agents were leaving the Chicago area, DHS said they don’t forecast operations, and enforcement will continue in Illinois.

Enforcement tactics, including use of chemical agents, by federal agents throughout Operation Midway Blitz have led to several lawsuits.

A group of protesters, clergy and journalists are currently suing the federal government over alleged excessive and “indiscriminate” use of tear gas and pepper spray during Operation Midway Blitz.

During a preliminary injunction hearing in early November, an attorney representing the group argued federal agents repeatedly used tear gas and pepper spray against non-violent protesters, clergy or members of the press.

While acknowledging that some individuals may have slashed tires of agents’ vehicles or thrown objects, one of the plaintiffs’ attorneys, Craig Futterman, argued they’ve been met with “brutal violence” by the same federal government tasked with protecting their constitutional rights.

Sarmad M Khojasteh, an attorney representing the federal government, told the judge overseeing the lawsuit that she should “reject the notion that first amendment sanitizes the violence” that agents saw and experienced during Operation Midway Blitz, saying agents’ lives have been threatened.

Operation Santa kicked off in downtown Chicago Saturday with the arrival of Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus.

The Claus’ were joined by Chicago police officers, supporters, and members of the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation as they embark on a special delivery this weekend.

“It warms our hearts to see smiles on the faces of the families that we promise to never forget,” said Phil Cline, Executive Director of Chicago Police Memorial Foundation.

They loaded up their vehicles to deliver gifts and holiday cheer to families and children of fallen officers and those who were seriously injured in the line of duty.

“Our Gold Star families are extremely important to us they’re resilience, they’re strong, and they’re tough and we have to make sure that we get out let them know that we’re still there with them,” said Superintendent Larry Snelling, Chicago Police Department.  

Their first stop was at the home of Chicago police officer Carlos Yanez Jr.

“It’s events like this that really makes me think about the good things in life you know,” he said. “There’s no words, I mean just grateful, thankful, and blessed.”

His fellow officers greeted him with love, hugs, and tears and showered his 7-year-old son with gifts.

“[The] Chicago Police Memorial Foundation is so amazing what they do for the families throughout the years for our kids,” he said.

The officer was shot multiple times during a 2021 traffic stop that killed his partner officer Ella French. Yanez said not a day goes by that he doesn’t think about her mother.

“Elizabeth French, I get most of my strength from Elizabeth and my family,” he said. “Elizabeth French is so strong anytime I’m having a hard day I just think about her.”

This Christmas his one wish is for everyone and his fellow officers to be safe.

“Every time you put on the badge and uniform you don’t know if you’re going to go home to your family,” he said. “It’s a dangerous job, it’s a service, we want to be there for other people. We want to help people and help them go home to their families at night.”

Operation Santa will visit the homes of 13 Chicago police officers this weekend.

The incident was reported at approximately 1:08 p.m. along West Jackson Boulevard near South Desplaines Street. Police said a 54-year-old man was discovered on the ground with multiple stab wounds to his chest.

He was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

No one was in custody as Area Three detectives continued to investigate.

The Bears have continued to gain momentum since snapping an 11-game losing streak and ending the 2024 regular season with a win at Green Bay. Heading into the matchup with the Packers at Lambeau Field, they have the NFC’s best record and carry five wins in a row.

When the teams go head-to-head on Sunday, it’ll actually be the first of two meetings in the span of 14 days.

In what was a tough blow for the team, the Bears ruled out top receiver Rome Odunze because of a lingering foot injury.

Odunze did not practice this week. His foot has been bothering him since October, and the team had been managing the injury by having him sit out at least one practice per week.

Linebacker T.J. Edwards is poised to make a return after missing the past four games because of hand and hamstring injuries. He was a full participant in practice on Friday after being limited earlier in the week.

At least two other Bears won’t be playing, along with five Packers.

Both teams feeling positive

Earlier this week, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams said what the team has been able to accomplish this year has “given us extreme confidence.”

 “And then, for myself, being a part of something that, everybody knows the stats of the Bears going up there before last year, it wasn’t the best,” he stated. “And so being able to be a part of that (win), being able to contribute to that, provides confidence for myself, and I’m going to exude that to the other guys.”

Chicago hasn’t had a winning season since 2018, but the Bears’ emergence doesn’t surprise Packers safety Xavier McKinney.

McKinney was impressed with the creativity new Bears coach Ben Johnson showed as Detroit’s offensive coordinator when the Lions swept the Packers last season.

“I knew they were going to be good,” McKinney said. “Especially whenever they ended up getting Ben Johnson, I was, ‘OK, they’re going to be a problem this year.’”

The Packers also are feeling good about themselves. They’ve won three straight and are eager to regain control of this rivalry.

“I feel like our team knows that we control our destiny at this point,” Packers safety Evan Williams said. “There’s a lot that’s to be said about the Bears and how they’re doing right now. They’ve put together a hell of a season. But at the end of the day, I feel like we all understand if we go out there, put our best foot forward and play our best ball, that we don’t feel there’s a team that can hang with us.”

Customers have received letters explaining the utility will be pulling the plug on landlines in March of 2027 across Illinois. AT&T previously announced its intention to eliminate copper-based phone services across all of its service areas in the United States by 2029.

The phasing-out process will take multiple years, a spokesperson said, and no customers will be left without access to voice or 911 service.

While the company claims customer interest has dipped in recent years, others maintain there’s still a need for traditional landlines.

Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming chance, what opponents say and how the replacement option will work.

What is happening and why?

The utility is phasing out landline use and upgrading its copper-based service to “newer, less expensive options ” including fiber optic networks.

According to AT&T, orders for traditional landline voice services have decreased 96% since 2014 and less than 2% of eligible customers are still using the legacy landline technology.

Citizens Utility Board response

The Citizens Utility Board, which opposes the shift, said the organization is of the belief that “there are still a significant number of people–many of them AT&T’s longest-standing and most loyal customers–who could benefit from the reliability and affordability of traditional phone service.”

“Traditional landline service was once the most reliable and affordable option for many customers who just wanted no-frills phone service,” Communications Director Jim Chilsen said. “It is sad and frustrating how AT&T in recent years has increased the price of traditional landline service, pushing many customers to more expensive and less reliable options–and now the phone giant is ending the service altogether.”

What is replacing traditional landlines? How does it work?

A digital home phone service that operates similar to a traditional landline – AT&T Phone — Advanced, also called AP-A, is offered at a comparable or sometimes lower cost, a company spokesperson said.

Customers who make the switch can keep their existing number and can even use their current hone, according to AT&T. It also works with a number of other technologies, including fax machines, alarms, elevators and medical monitoring devices.

Unlike the traditional landlines, AP-A uses AT&T’s wireless network and allows customers to stay connected during an outage by tapping into broadband connection as a backup, the utility explained.

Will County sheriff’s officials said on Thursday authorities learned an infant was possibly buried at a property along Roberts Street near Bass Street in unincorporated Wilmington. Detectives conducted an investigation and learned a woman had given birth, and the child’s remains were located at the property in question.

The remains, authorities said, were marked with a “makeshift headstone” at the property.

After obtaining a warrant, deputies took several people into custody, and crime scene investigators began working at the scene. The investigators dug approximately 3 feet into the ground and found an Old Style beer box that contained the remains of a baby, sheriff’s deputies stated.

The remains, which were wrapped in a cloth, were handed over to the Will County Coroner’s Office. Deputies said two people, a 36-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman, were interviewed and made “incriminating statements” regarding concealing the infant’s death.

Formal charges were expected to be filed by the Will County Coroner’s Office once the autopsy is finished.

According to the National Weather Service, a period of accumulating snow is likely beginning Saturday night, with the highest amounts expected north of Interstate 80. As a result, a winter weather advisory is slated to take effect at midnight for Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and northern Will counties.

Before the snow arrives, expect to see cloudy conditions, though a glimpse of sunshine or two will be possible throughout the day, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack said. Temperatures, meanwhile, will be on the chilly side, as values top out in the upper 20s to around 30 degrees.

We’ll encounter clear conditions for a while – until midnight or so – when snow begins falling across the region. The snowfall will be moderate to heavy at times, Sack said, and as it continues, low temperatures will drop into the low-to-mid 20s.

Shoveling might be easier than in recent snowfalls. Because only a light breeze is expected, the snow likely won’t be blowing around much. Snowy conditions will come to an end at roughly around 9 a.m., when the winter weather advisory is slated to expire.

When all is said and done, expect to see anywhere from around two inches of snow on the ground in southern communities to higher totals in the northern suburbs.

Sack said forecast models indicate as much as five inches of snow along the Illinois-Wisconsin state line with lesser amounts to the south, but still nearly two inches in Kankakee.

That’ll be enough to bring out the shovels, but folks in the northern suburbs might need to power up their snow blowers.

The snow will be light and fluffy Sack said, so it should be pretty easy to push out of the way. Following the weekend snow system, the next few days will bring cloudy and windy conditions – along with chilly temperatures.

According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, we’ll see dry conditions to begin the workweek, ahead of the next chance of snow, which will arrive late Tuesday into early Wednesday.

A rain-snow mix will quickly change over to snow as temperatures drop for a good part of the day. The next wintry blast won’t be far after that, as Thursday brings another chance of light snow.

A third round of snow could arrive early next weekend, Sack said, but by that time, a northwesterly flow will be dragging in some cold air. Highs are only expected to reach the low-to-mid teens next Saturday, followed by readings in the mid-to-upper teens on Sunday.

The ship, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw, arrived earlier this week with 1,200 healthy, fresh Christmas trees to help make the holidays a little brighter. The trees were expected to be offloaded at 8:30 a.m. during a festival that included holiday music and even offered tours of the ice cutter.

The annual event was made possible by the Chicago Christmas Ship Committee, which started in 2000. Each year since, a group of mariners from different industries have gotten together to deliver holiday cheer to families who might not otherwise have a tree.

While Saturday is the main event, that’s not all the ship planned.

On Friday, the vessel, which was lit up in festive lights, delivered a free holiday show to people who live in buildings nearby.

Carrie J. Kelley, 43, of Sparta, was arrested on two counts of theft of property over $1,000,000, one court of wire fraud and four counts of fraudulent filing of Illinois income tax, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office said. Sparta, which is located near the Mississippi River, is roughly 50 miles southeast of St. Louis.

Sheriff’s officials said they were informed of a potential theft regarding MedStar Ambulance, and through a lengthy investigation, investigators determined more than $1,000,000 were taken over the course of several years. Kelley was arrested by sheriff’s deputies and Illinois Department of Revenue investigators without incident on Friday, officials stated.

“I want to credit the Investigators who continued to work on this case and bring a closure to it,” Sheriff Jarrod Peters said. “Their continued hard work and determination led to the arrest of Kelley.”

Additional details about the theft hadn’t been released as of Friday.

Randolph County investigators were assisted by the Department of Revenue and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office.

Lawmakers in the Republican-majority House voted 57-41 in favor of the map, which splits the city of Indianapolis into four districts to help the GOP potentially win all nine Indiana congressional seats. While Trump and many other Republicans are celebrating the passage, the map faces its true test in the Senate, where many GOP lawmakers have opposed mid-decade redistricting.

Democrats in the House minority decried the new map, with many criticizing the swift timeline of the past week. The map was introduced on Monday. By contrast, when the current congressional district map was passed in 2021, lawmakers held multiple public hearings around the state over several months beforehand.

Democratic state Rep. Greg Porter, who represents Indianapolis, railed against the proposal on the House floor, saying it would dilute the power of Black Hoosiers. U.S. Rep. André Carson, who has represented Indianapolis for the past 17 years and stands to lose his seat, is the state’s only Black member of Congress.

“What we’re doing today with this proposed legislation is taking away the rights of Black and brown people in Indiana,” Porter said. “It cracks Marion County!”

State under pressure from White House

While redistricting is typically done at the beginning of a new decade with the census, Trump has pushed Republican-led states to redistrict this year to give the GOP an easier path to maintaining its majority in the U.S. House. Democrats only need to flip a handful of seats next November to overcome the GOP’s current margin, and midterm elections typically favor the party opposite the one in power.

Indiana lawmakers have been under increasing pressure from the White House to follow the lead of Republicans in Texas, Missouri, Ohio and North Carolina, which have all passed new maps in recent months ahead of next year’s midterms. To offset the GOP gains, Democrats in California and Virginia have moved to do the same.

Republicans currently hold seven of Indiana’s nine U.S. House seats.

The author of Indiana’s legislation, Republican state Rep. Ben Smaltz, said on the floor Wednesday that the map and bill language were provided by the National Republican Redistricting Trust, the GOP’s primary redistricting entity that was also involved in drawing Texas’ new map this year. Smaltz said the trust gave Indiana Republicans one option for the statewide map.

Smaltz said Friday the tit-for-tat mid-decade redistricting between Democratic and Republican states may continue for the next several cycles and “may be the new normal.”

Republican Todd Huston, Indiana’s House speaker, took to the floor Friday to defend the redistricting proposal in light of the partisan power balance across the country, saying “we don’t operate in a vacuum.”

The Indiana House vote ups the pressure on Senate Republicans to approve the new map for final passage.

Gov. Mike Braun, a first-term Republican and ally of Trump, praised the House vote Friday.

“I urge the Senate to move quickly next week and adopt this map so Indiana can move forward with confidence,” he said.

Trump pushed senators to pass the proposal “AS IS,” in a social media post Friday evening. He also named nine individual senators he described as needing “encouragement to make the right decision.”

“Let your voice be heard loud and clear in support of these Senators doing the right thing,” Trump wrote.

Map advances to state Senate

The immediate next hurdle for the new map will come in a Senate committee, which is scheduled to meet Monday afternoon.

The top Republican of the state Senate, Rodric Bray, has previously said there were not enough votes to support redistricting, but it is unknown where the vote count stands now. In the 50-member Senate, Republicans need at least 25 votes to pass the legislation. A 26th tiebreaking vote could come from Republican Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith.

The issue has sharply divided Republicans in the Hoosier state. Senators on both sides of the issue have been subject to threats and swatting attempts in recent weeks.

Trump has also said he will back primary opponents against any GOP senator who opposes redistricting. But half the chamber, including Bray, is not up for reelection until 2028.

The map approved by House Republicans splits the Democratic city of Indianapolis — which currently makes up the entirety of the 7th Congressional District — into four quadrants divided among four rural districts. The new map also groups the cities of East Chicago and Gary with several Republican counties in northern Indiana, potentially ousting Democratic U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan, who represents the current district in the state’s northwest corner near Chicago.

In the ballooning redistricting battle, the U.S. Supreme Court handed a win to Texas Republicans on Thursday by allowing the state to conduct next year’s elections under the new congressional map that favors the GOP and could give the party five more seats.

Police had released images of 26-year-old DJ Marshall who was wanted in the shooting of an officer in Granite City, which is situated across the Mississippi River from St. Louis.

Granite City Police Chief Gary Brooks said that afternoon, officers responded to a call of an unwanted subject and immediately encountered a man who began firing shots.

One officer was struck several times and rushed to a St. Louis hospital for treatment, KSDK, the NBC affiliate in St. Louis reported. The officer was awake and speaking – and he was expected to make a full recovery, Brooks stated at a news conference on Friday evening.

Police later released images of Marshall and said a $5,000 reward was being offered for information the leads to his arrest.

At around 2:45 p.m., video from Sky 5 showed thick smoke rising from the Honeybee apartment complex in the 8600 block of West Foster Avenue near North Cumberland Avenue.

The Chicago Fire Department said their crews evacuated the building and began defensive operations against the fire, using at least two ladders to hose the flames. At least four units were destroyed by the fire and many others were filled with smoke, authorities said.

Flames burst from windows on the building’s third floor, video showed.

A person whose 9-year-old brother attends Everett Mckinley Dirksen Elementary School told NBC Chicago he called their mother crying and said he could not breathe due to smoke in the building from the fire.

“There’s a bad fire,” the student told his family over text around 2:30 p.m. “It smells.”

As people evacuated, smoke carried next door to the school, where multiple students said smoke made it into classrooms.

“it kept getting thicker, and thicker, then we heard an announcement go get your coats just in case,” said Nouriman Boulaid, an eighth-grade student.

The fire was under control by 5 p.m., CFD said. No injuries were reported, though many residents were treated for smoke inhalation. One firefighter slipped and fell, officials added.

While the cause remained unclear, the fire prompted CFD officials to deliver a winter safety message.

“If you use a space heater, just make sure you plug it into the walls,” CFD Deputy Chief Donald Walker said. “if you have a Christmas tree, make sure you water and don’t dry out, and unplug and cut off your space heater at night when you go to bed.”

Around 12:51 p.m. Friday, authorities in Marengo responded to a crash on the 9200 block of South Grant Highway and found a work van with a gaping hole in its shattered windshield. The work truck was branded with the company logo for ASAP Plumbing & HVAC, a company based in Woodstock.

Authorities learned during their investigation that “a chunk of snow or ice had fallen off a semi-truck” and struck the man’s windshield.

The driver was evaluated by paramedics at the scene and taken to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries, authorities said.

The semi-truck driver did not remain at the scene, though it was not immediately known if they were aware the incident occurred.

“This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of removing snow and ice from your vehicle before driving,” a representative of Marengo Fire and Rescue Districts said in a statement. “High profile vehicles, including trucks, vans, and commercial vehicles, can accumulate large amounts of snow and ice that may dislodge while in motion and create serious roadway hazards. Taking a few extra minutes to clear your vehicle helps protect you and everyone else on the road.”

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.

ASAP Plumbing & HVAC did not immediately respond to NBC Chicago’s inquiry.

No additional information was immediately provided.

Video from NBC Chicago’s Sky 5 helicopter showed several train cars off the tracks near 99th Street and Marquette Avenue. The train cars were carrying asphalt, NBC Chicago has learned.

No commuter trains were affected by the derailment, as it didn’t occur along a Metra route.

Additional information wasn’t immediately available.

The women separately arranged to meet with the man on the dating app, police said, and were led into an apartment upon arriving at the agreed upon locations — all in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood.

Once inside the apartment, the man displayed a handgun, sexually assaulted the victims and took their property, police said. He also used their cellphones to transfer money from the victim’s bank accounts.

Police said the incidents occurred at the following times and places:

• Around 3 p.m. on Oct. 3 on the 6400 block of South Ingleside Avenue
• Around 12:07 a.m. on Oct. 17 on the 6400 block of South Ingleside Avenue
• Around 11 a.m. on Dec. 4 on the 6400 block of South Drexel Avenue

The suspect is described as a Black man who is estimated to be between 28 to 33 years old, police said. He is between 6-foot and 6-foot-3-inches tall, roughly 150 to 250 pounds with a light complexion and a short hairstyle.

Police did not specify what online dating app the victims used, or if they all used the same app.

Around 9:43 a.m. Friday, Illinois State Police responded to a crash on southbound I-294 near 31st Street in Oakbrook. Three vehicles were involved, authorities said, including a semi-truck.

Five people were transported to local hospitals with injuries, authorities said.

Authorities did not specify the cause of the crash.

No additional information was immediately available.

Dr. Sameer Vohra, the director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, said he’s “deeply concerned” by the shift away from universal newborn vaccination, and there hasn’t been any new evidence to support the change.

“For decades, the best available science has shown that administering the hepatitis B vaccine at birth is safe, effective, and critical in preventing chronic liver disease and liver cancer later in life…” he shared in a statement, in part.

While the shots are widely considered to be a public health success for preventing thousands of illnesses, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices decided to recommend the birth dose only for babies whose mothers test positive, and in cases where the mom wasn’t tested. The panel’s current members were all appointed by U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — a leading anti-vaccine activist before this year becoming the nation’s top health official.

A loud chorus of medical and public health leaders decried the actions of the panel, and other states, including Connecticut and New York, joined Illinois in continuing to recommend the shots.

IDPH, affirming its position, cited a University of Minnesota study that showed hepatitis B infection among U.S. children has dropped by 99% since universal newborn vaccination began in 1991.

For babies whose mothers don’t test positive, will be up to the parents and their doctors to decide if a birth dose is appropriate. The committee voted 8-3 to suggest that when a family elects to wait, then the vaccination series should begin when the child is 2 months old.

The acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Jim O’Neill, is expected to decide later whether to accept the committee’s recommendation.

The Rosemont Department of Public Safety released a 911 call recording from Nov. 23, presumably made by an employee of the DoubleTree Hotel near O’Hare Airport.

The caller, who was alongside Reid when she phoned emergency services, initially told the dispatcher, “We had a guest here that is really inebriated, and she needs help from the hospital.”

Continuing to describe the situation, the person stated, “She can barely stand, she can barely sit in a wheelchair. She’s not responding sometimes.”

At one point, the caller said, “Ms. Reid, Ms. Reid,” and another person in the background was heard slurring their speech.

“She’s a celebrity, just so you know,” the apparent employee told the 911 operator.

“She’s a celebrity?” the dispatcher asked.

“Yeah,” the caller stated.

Shortly before the call ended, the dispatcher asked, “Is she responding normally?”

“No, no, she’s not,” the caller explained. “She’s laying on the floor in the hallway. We don’t want her to hit her head if she gets up. We just want to make sure she’s alright.”

Reid was hospitalized following the incident, and she later filed a police report alleging her drink had been tampered with at a bar inside the hotel.

The “American Pie” actress told TMZ that she had left a drink at the bar unattended while smoking a cigarette, and when she came back, the drink had a napkin placed on top that she did not put there. She went on to drink her beverage, and the next thing she remembered was waking up in the hospital.

Authorities shared an update earlier this week, saying surveillance footage from the hotel showed a bartender covering Reid’s drink when she left, “which is standard practice for bartenders to do.”

“While video surveillance showed Tara Reid at the hotel bar, at no time did video show anyone tampering with or adding something to her drink,” police stated.

Law enforcement said, while they were still waiting on hospital records, they believe “no criminal act” was committed at the hotel and they were not investigating any suspects.

That’s because his wife is from the Green Bay area, where he will be playing for Chicago on Sunday.

“My wife’s from Green Bay, so this means a lot for me too because her whole family is, you know, Packer fans and stuff like that,” he told reporters Friday ahead of the game.

Edwards, who’s missed several games with hand and hamstring injuries, is expected to get back in uniform on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

The Bears and Packers share the oldest rivalry in NFL history, but the rivalry will take on added attention starting this weekend as the two teams face each other twice in three weeks.

The Bears come into Sunday’s game with a 9-3 record and the top seed in the NFC, marking the first time since the 2006 season that Chicago has been in the top spot in the NFC entering December. Of course, that same year the Bears reached the Super Bowl.

The Packers are coming into the game with an 8-3-1 record after beating the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day, leaving them just one-half game behind the Bears in the division standings.

The Bears lost the first game ever played at Lambeau field, on Sept. 29, 1957, and it’s been a tough place for them to play since. They are 25-41 all-time at Lambeau, and their record recently is not good.

The last time the Bears were able to win consecutive road games against the Packers was across the 2006 and 2007 seasons, when they won their third straight game at Lambeau over Green Bay.

They could do it again this weekend, after the team won the season finale in 2025 against the Packers at the venerable stadium, snapping an 11-game losing streak against their bitter rivals.

Needless to say, this weekend’s matchup will have plenty on the line.

Edwards said he knew what he was getting into when the two lovebirds met at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

“I already knew … what type of time they were on when I met them, but, I’m slowly, you know, converting them for sure,” he said.

So who will his in-laws be rooting for this weekend?

While Edwards said they’ll be wearing blue in his honor, their allegiance to the green and yellow may not be gone entirely.

“They go like blue jacket, but you gotta check the turtlenecks sometimes. Sometimes they got the green underneath, so I gotta check them, but it’ll be fun,” he said.

The Bears will take on the Packers Sunday, with kick off at 3:25 p.m. CT.

The fire broke out overnight near Karlov and North Avenues. One victim reported being trapped in the building before being rescued by firefighters.

She didn’t want to be identified but told NBC Chicago through an interpreter: “I was sleeping at the time my sister-in-law woke me up, and she went to take me out,” she recalled. “At the time there was a lot of smoke and we we’re not sure where to exit there was a lot of fire on the back and a lot of smoke on the front.”

The woman is from Ecuador and has lived here for about a year. She said she, her brother, sister-in-law and nephew had to be rescued from the fire.

“We tried to exit through the front door but again there was a lot of smoke, so we had to go back to the apartment, and we were shouting for help through the window and that’s where the firefighters pulled us out of the building,” she said. “They checked us and took us to different hospitals but thank God, they got us all out.”

Firefighters arrived on scene to find smoke coming from the basement and residents evacuating.

“We did have some fire extensions to get up to the upper floors and the back porches, so we had a total of approximately 4 lines on the interior battling the fire,” said Deputy District Chief Ernie Pinkston Jr, Chicago Fire Department’s 4th District.

The Deputy District Chief also praised the work of firefighters to make sure everyone made it out safely.

“The men and women of the fire department on the scene did a great job with the circumstances of the cold weather,” he said. “[They] did a fantastic job and all our searches were final and negative.”

Paramedics could be seen loading victims into ambulances. Many of them were treated for smoke inhalation, including an 81-year-old woman.

Alexander Espada lives right next door and said she’s the owner the building.

“She’s been here like I said for about 28 years,” he said. “Very nice family, very to themselves, they take care of the sidewalks sometimes they’ll even take care of mine.”

The Chicago Fire Department said a total of ten people were transported: 3 in serious to critical condition and 7 believed to be in fair condition.

With the holidays right around the corner, Espada is worried about his neighbors and wants to do his part to help as they rebuild.

“I don’t know where they’re going to stay. We can open our doors to a few of them, but our house isn’t that big,” he said. “I just want us all to be able to reach out to each other as neighbors you know.”

The American Red Cross is helping residents displaced by the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. 

The utility is phasing out landline use as it works with customers to “upgrade their copper-based service to newer, less expensive options like AT&T Phone – Advanced,” a spokesperson told NBC Chicago.

Current customers can keep their existing landline service until it is discontinued in 2027, the AT&T spokesperson said. However, AT&T sent letters to customers notifying them that as of Oct. 15 landline service is no longer being offered to new customers and current customers cannot make changes to their existing service, according to Illinois consumer advocacy group Citizens Utility Board.

The phasing out process will take multiple years, the spokesperson added, and no customers will be left without access to voice or 911 service.

Over 3 million Illinois adults had a landline phone as of July 2024, according to a study from research firm Chamber of Commerce. Though not all of the landline phones in Illinois are serviced by AT&T, most are, according to CUB.

AT&T, however, says orders for traditional landline voice services have decreased 96% since 2014 and less than 2% of eligible customers are still using the legacy landline technology.

Despite the utility’s claims of waning interest in landlines from customers, Citizens Utility Board Communications Director Jim Chilsen said the organization is of the belief that “there are still a significant number of people–many of them AT&T’s longest-standing and most loyal customers–who could benefit from the reliability and affordability of traditional phone service.”

“Traditional landline service was once the most reliable and affordable option for many customers who just wanted no-frills phone service,” Chilsen said. “It is sad and frustrating how AT&T in recent years has increased the price of traditional landline service, pushing many customers to more expensive and less reliable options–and now the phone giant is ending the service altogether.”

AT&T Phone — Advanced, also called AP-A, is a digital home phone service that works similar to a traditional landline, the company’s spokesperson said. It is offered at a comparable or sometimes lower cost.

Customers who switch to AP-A are able to keep their existing number and can even use their current telephone, according to AT&T. It also works with a number of other technologies, including fax machines, alarms, elevators and medical monitoring devices.

Unlike the traditional landlines, AP-A uses AT&T’s wireless network and allows customers to stay connected during an outage by tapping into broadband connection as a backup, the utility said in a statement. It also features caller ID and call blocking for spam calls.

Illinois is the only state that requires the utility give more than a year of advanced notice to customers ahead of filing to discontinue service at the FCC and AT&T will notify customers multiple times throughout the process, the spokesperson said.

NBC Chicago spoke to Illinois residents who rely on their landline in 2017 when AT&T began lobbying for two deregulation bills that CUB warned would “open the door” for the utility to end landline service.

“What would I do?” one resident said to NBC Chicago in 2017. “How would I talk to my friends?”

The National Weather Service said in a social media post a clipper system is expected to move in from the Great Plains into the Great Lakes starting Saturday night, bringing a “swath” of snow that could lead to slippery road conditions.

Ahead of the main event over the weekend, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Iisha Scott said some flurries were possible on Friday evening. Saturday, however, will begin on a different note; dry weather and high temperatures in the upper 20s will set it before clouds begin building in the overnight hours.

When Sunday morning rolls around, accumulating snow will spread across the area and continue for several hours. For those who will be out and about either late Saturday or early Sunday, prepare to take it slow; the NWS is warning of potential commute impacts, including slippery conditions, snow-covered roads and reduced visibility.

Significant snow totals aren’t expected overall, but a few inches of accumulating snow are likely, mainly in the south and southwest suburbs. Up to three inches of snow are possible in those areas, Scott said.

Additionally, lingering, light snow is possible near the lake.

By Sunday afternoon, the clouds will clear out, and we’ll get some sunshine.

The looming round of snow might be the soonest, but it won’t be the only chance.

The NWS issued a hazardous weather outlook, advising of a series of clipper systems that may bring “regular opportunities” for snow and travel impacts through next week.

A second round of snow is possible late Tuesday, followed by the possibility of additional snow showers on Wednesday, Scott said.

We won’t be in the clear on Thursday, either, as another chance for snow will emerge then.

The Bears released their latest injury report Friday and it appears wide receiver Rome Odunze did not practice and has been ruled out for the game. Linebacker Ruben Hyppolite and defensive back Tyrique Stevenson, both of whom missed the Philadelphia Black Friday game, will also not play Sunday.

There was still some good news on the injury front for Chicago, however.

Linebacker Noah Sewell, who missed last week’s game with an elbow injury, and defensive lineman Dominique Robinson, who missed the game with a concussion, both practiced in full Friday.

The team also revealed that linebacker TJ Edwards, who has missed their last four games with hand and hamstring injuries, also practiced in full Friday after being “limited” earlier this week.

The Bears, winners of nine of their last 10 games, are hoping to win for the second consecutive season in Wisconsin.

Cornerback Jaylon Johnson, who played against the Eagles in his first game action since Week 2 of the season, was also a full participant.

The Bears will have one more injury report prior to Sunday’s game, which will kick off at 3:25 p.m. CT on Fox.

Police said in an update Friday that at least four vehicles were involved in the crash and injuries were reported. It was not clear how many people were hurt or how severe their injuries were.

Police said the crash, which shut down parts of Big Timber and North State Street (Route 31) for hours during the afternoon and evening rush hours Thursday, remained under investigation Friday.

Further details on what led to the crash were not released.

Elgin police on Thursday urged drivers to avoid the area of North State Street and Big Timber as the roadways were shut down.

“We ask drivers to avoid the area and to use alternate routes,” the department wrote in an alert on social media.

The intersection was closed from just before 5 p.m. to around 10 p.m. Thursday.

The crash took place near the entrance and exit ramps to Interstate 90 for the northwest suburb and just outside of Judson University.

Around noon Friday, Chicago Fire Department officials pulled an adult man from the river near the intersection of East Wacker Drive and North Wabash Avenue.

The man was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition, authorities said.

CFD crews were seen along the river on East Wacker Drive and a CFD boat and the scuba team were also on scene.

It was not immediately clear how the man ended up in the river.

Temperatures in Chicago were forecast to peak in the mid-to-upper 20s Friday after a bitter cold morning.

No additional information was immediately available.

Bears players past and present know the game between the oldest enemies in the NFL means more.

“It’s almost like its own world championship on its own – Bears vs. Packers,” said former Bears player Israel Idonije, who played with Chicago for a decade. “I was here from ’03 to ’13. Chicago is always better when the Bears are winning, then you 10 times that when the Bears beat the Packers. It’s just another level of joy and excitement.” The two NFC North teams are founding members of the NFL and have played more games against each other than any other teams in the league.

In the first ever game contested between the teams, the Bears, then known as the Chicago Staleys, beat the Packers 20-0. They’ve gone on to play more than 200 games against each other.

But it wasn’t all bad blood.

If fact, when the Packers were nearly bankrupt in the 1920s, George Halas voted to keep them in the league.

The Chicago Sports Museum, part of Harry Caray’s restaurant in the Water Tower Place, has highlighted the history of the iconic rivalry.

“I mean the rivalry goes way, way back. And famously back in 86, Coach Ditka was talking smack about the packers even though they weren’t playing them,” said Harry Caray’s General Manager Ashton Roush.

That same animosity has permeated some players and fans of the Bears for years. In the case of Cole Kmet, it’s both.

Growing up a Bears fan in Arlington Heights, tight end Kmet relishes being a part of the Bears-Packers rivalry.

“You know obviously growing up as a fan, it’s just a big game every year because I think this is the most historic rivalry in the National Football League,” Kmet said in a 2020 interview. “So as a fan obviously from afar on Sunday you’re getting ready for it and what not. As a player, the lead-up to this is pretty exciting, and we all know the meaning behind it and the history behind it. The preparation for the whole week, you feel it.”

In previous seasons, he talked about how it shaped his fandom from a young age.

“All those Bears-Packers games were a big deal in my house and with all my friends,” he noted. “There was no green or yellow in my house, so, we’ll leave it at that.”

According to NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman, Friday during the daytime hours would be dry, with temperatures rising in the mid-to-upper 20s after a bitter cold morning.

“The high temperature will actually occur overnight,” Roman said, with some parts seeing 30 degree readings.

Also overnight into Saturday morning is the first chance for more snowfall, with a light, wintry mix expected in some areas.

“Maybe even some freezing drizzle,” Roman said.

After that, the next “disturbance” expected to begin around 11 p.m. Saturday, bringing widespread snow but minor accumulations through Sunday morning and afternoon.

Sunday’s snow would end at about noon, Roman said, though lake effect snow was possible Sunday night, primarily across Cook and Lake Counties in Illinois and possibly parts of northwest Indiana.

By Tuesday and Wednesday, another disturbance was expected, though higher temperatures could create a rain-snow mix, the NBC 5 Storm Team said.

“We’ll have the chance of snow that may also mix with sleet and rain in the afternoon,” according to Jeanes. “There may be some big snow totals across Wisconsin from this one, so we’ll need to watch for any shifts in the storm track.”

The National Weather Service described the weather pattern as “clipper fronts” moving through about every 36 hours, with “regular opportunities for snow and travel impacts.”

“Picture it like a moving conveyor belt locked in place,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said. “Multiple weak storm systems are going to develop and move along this conveyor belt over the next week or so.

These weaker systems are called “Alberta Clippers,” Jeanes said. The name is derived from two elements: fast-moving ships in the 1800s called “Clippers,” and the fact that these areas of low pressure typically form in western Canada.  They move fast, and don’t usually carry a lot of moisture to bring significant amounts of snow.

Still, accumulations are possible.

How much snow could the system bring?

While Clippers don’t have a ton of moisture to produce big snow totals, the exact tracks can change quickly in the models because of their speed, Jeanes said. Any shifts southward could bring impacts to Illinois.

In general, the favorable spots for higher snow totals will be in Illinois north of I-80.  The Chicago area could see around 3-6 inches combined through the week, but Wisconsin should get much higher totals, Jeanes added.

According to a release, Buona Beef’s “Good, Better, Best” giveaway comes as the Bears head to Lambeau Field in Green Bay to face their age-old rival Green Bay Packers. This time, the Bears’ bet comes with tiers: and “the more Chicago wins, the bigger the prize.”

If the Bears’ win by 1-6 points, will get free cheese fries, the chain said. If the Bears win by between 7 and 13 points, customers will get a free Italian Sausage.

If the Bears beat Green Bay by 14 or more points, the chain will give away free Bunoa Italian Beef sandwiches.

“There’s no better feeling than defeating the Pack,” Buona’s website said. “We’re planning on celebrating our best victory of the season on December 9.”

Depending on the game’s final score, customers can use code “Good,” “Better” or “Best” on Tuesday to redeem their free food in-store, via drive-thru or with online orders.

The offers will be valid with a $5 minimum subtotal after all discounts are applied, the company said.

The Bears-Packers matchup is scheduled for 3:25 p.m. CT on Sunday, Dec. 7.

Grace Hunt of Grace Eva Cakes revealed her 2025 window display in mid-November, not realizing what would come of her creation. This year’s display, she said, held special significance.

“Every year I do a Christmas window reveal for my shop and the local community and I thought, ‘Well, I know that the film turned 35 years this year in the same month that I did’ so I thought, ‘What better cake to do than something that resonates with me?’ It’s very nostalgic, it’s my favorite Christmas film and I thought, ‘Well, it’s also my birthday month’ so it had to be celebrated,” Hunt told NBC Chicago.

But when she posted her big reveal on social media, it became a global hit. Her original post of the reveal received thousands of likes and comments across social media platforms.

“I did not expect this reaction,” Hunt said. “This has gone worldwide. It’s crazy.”

Even the realtor who sold the home in the Chicago suburb of Winnetka reached out about the cake, she said.

Hunt said the cake, which is made of vanilla sponge cake and chocolate ganash covered in fondant, took four weeks to create and was hand painted.

Fans of the holiday classic may notice several odes to the film in the cake, including the dancing scene, the wet bandits, the bronze statue, the tarantula, Little Nero’s pizza delivery, the wet bandits van and more.

Hunt’s bakery has been open just over five years in Beverly East Yorkshire in England. The annual window reveal tradition has become a highlight for the store and its community, but Hunt said this particular display may last longer than year’s past.

“I don’t think I’ll be getting rid of it anytime soon,” she said.

Approximately 9,400 sets of Crayola magnetic building “pip-Cubes” were recalled Dec. 4, the commission said, because of a magnet ingestion hazard. According to the recall, the magnets inside the building cubes could become loose. If swallowed by young children, they can become dangerous, the recall said.

“When high-powered magnets are swallowed, the ingested magnets can attract to each other, or other metal objects, and become lodged in the digestive system,” the recall said. “This can result in perforations, twisting, and/or blockage of the intestines, blood poisoning and death.”

According to the recall, the toy was made in China and imported by CreateOn LLC, based in suburban Wheeling.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled magnetic building cubes, take them away from children and contact CreateOn to receive a replacement set of pip-cubes,” the recall said. “Consumers will receive a pre-paid label to return the recalled magnetic cubes in order to receive the replacement.”

The Crayola sets were sold between May 2025 and July 2025 in Bold and Glitter Colors in sets of 24 or 27 cubes at Michael’s stores nationwide for about $20, the recall notice said. They were also sold online at Amazon with the following model and UPC numbers:

No injuries were reported, but three incidents related to the recall were, CreateOn said.

“At CreateOn, safety is our top priority,” the company said in a statement posted to its website. “We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and are committed to resolving it quickly and transparent.”

If approved by federal regulators, the transaction promises to create a new entertainment and media behemoth, uniting the world’s largest streaming destination with a storied 102-year-old film studio.

Warner Bros.’ portfolio includes HBO, the HBO Max streaming platform and the “Harry Potter” movie franchise. Netflix, home of “Stranger Things” and “Squid Game,” reaches more than 300 million paid subscribers across over 190 countries.

“Our mission has always been to entertain the world,” said Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, in a news release. “By combining Warner Bros.’ incredible library of shows and movies—from timeless classics like Casablanca and Citizen Kane to modern favorites like Harry Potter and Friends—with our culture-defining titles like Stranger Things, KPop Demon Hunters and Squid Game, we’ll be able to do that even better.

“Together, we can give audiences more of what they love and help define the next century of storytelling,” Sarandos added.

Netflix’s takeover of Warner Bros. ushers in a new era for Hollywood, which has evolved from a business focused on theatrical exhibition to an increasingly digital-first industry. The acquisition cements Netflix’s market dominance and expands the company’s content library as it faces off against tech giants like YouTube and TikTok.

The deal would give Netflix access to popular and lucrative intellectual property, including DC Comics characters such as Batman and Superman; the “Game of Thrones” TV saga; and a vast trove of titles stretching from “Casablanca” and “Dirty Harry” to “Dune” and “Barbie.”

In the lead-up to the announcement, Netflix attempted to reassure the creative community by reportedly promising to release Warner Bros. movies in brick-and-mortar cinemas. But many filmmakers are skeptical of Netflix’s business model, which prioritizes streaming distribution.

In a news release Friday announcing the deal, the two companies said that the acquisition would be a mix of cash and stock that valued Warner Bros. Discovery at $27.75 per share, with an enterprise value of $82.7 billion and an equity value of $72 billion, which takes into account Warner Bros. debt.

As of Thursday trading, Warner Bros. Discovery’s entire market capitalization — the value of the company based on its stock price — was $60 billion.

The size of Netflix’s offer for Warner’s streaming and HBO divisions was striking, with the streaming giant paying $72 billion for just those two divisions, more than the entire current company‘s $60 billion market value. To help complete the cash part of the deal, Netflix said it would take out a $59 billion bridge loan from three major banks.

Warner Bros. Discovery, weighed down by billions in debt and lackluster streaming growth, formally put itself up for sale in the fall. The company’s suitors included Paramount Skydance and Comcast, which each made bids in a largely secretive process. (Comcast owns NBCUniversal, the parent company of NBC News.)

“Today’s announcement combines two of the greatest storytelling companies in the world to bring to even more people the entertainment they love to watch the most,” David Zaslav, president and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, said in a news release.

“For more than a century, Warner Bros. has thrilled audiences, captured the world’s attention, and shaped our culture,” Zaslav added. “By coming together with Netflix, we will ensure people everywhere will continue to enjoy the world’s most resonant stories for generations to come.”

If the deal goes through, Zaslav would not stay with the combined company, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The tie-up would not include Warner-owned cable channels such as CNN, TNT and TBS.

Paramount was widely seen as the front-runner in the bidding war because of the company’s deep pockets and political ties. Paramount Chairman and CEO David Ellison is the son of Silicon Valley magnate Larry Ellison, a friend of President Donald Trump.

The corporate union between Warner Bros. and Netflix still faces potential antitrust scrutiny and political challenges.

In late November, three senators — Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, both Democrats, and Bernie Sanders of Vermont, an independent — sent a letter to the Justice Department Antitrust Division warning that any potential Warner Bros. merger could be tainted by “political favoritism and corruption.”

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., sent a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi the same month, cautioning that merging Netflix with HBO Max would create a company with a more than “30 percent share of the streaming market: a threshold traditionally viewed as presumptively problematic under antitrust law.”

In early December, an anonymous group of “concerned feature film producers” reportedly sent a letter to Congress urging them to publicly oppose Netflix’s bid and give the potential deal “the highest level of antitrust scrutiny,” according to Variety.

The deal could also draw attention from state regulators.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the California attorney general’s office said: “The Department of Justice believes further consolidation in markets that are central to American economic life — whether in the financial, airline, grocery, or broadcasting and entertainment markets — does not serve the American economy, consumers, or competition well.”

“We are committed to protecting consumers and California’s economy from consolidation we find unlawful,” the spokesperson added.

Warner Bros. has been owned by various corporate entities since its founding in 1923, and the company’s recent history is especially complex. It was acquired by AT&T for $85 billion in 2016. AT&T then spun off the Warner Bros. assets, which were merged with Discovery in 2022.

The fire started in the basement of the building, at 1532 and 1534 N. Karlov St., Deputy District Chief Ernie Pinkston Jr. said at the scene. After emergency responders arrived, they found multiple residents self-evacuating as the fire began to spread to other floors.

According to Pinkston Jr., about 10 people were taken to hospitals due to the fire. One of the transports was an 81-year-old woman who in fair condition and being treated for smoke inhalation, the Chicago Police Department said.

Videos and photos from the scene show multiple firefighters in and around the building, with some windows broken. Firefighters could also be seen using a ladder from the firetruck to come down from the top floor.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, CFD said.

No further details were available.

The annual list, released Dec. 1, is made up of 33 restaurants “where spectacular food is coupled with a damn good time,” editors wrote. “These are the places you hate to leave, but when you do, you leave full.”

Two Illinois restaurants made the cut: Mirra and Pizz’Amici; both of which are in Chicago.

Mirra, which opened in 2024 at 1954 W. Armitage Ave., combines Indian and Mexican cooking, with dishes like barbacoa lamb birayni and hamachi aguachile.

“One bite spans the globe,” editors wrote.

Earlier this year, Mirra earned a Bib Gourmand recommendation from the Michelin Guide.

For Pizz’Amici, which opened in 1215 W. Grand Ave., in West Town, editors wrote the “vibes are immaculate and the pies are perfect,” and typically has a lined out the door.

Eater Chicago also named Pizz’Amici the “Best New Pizzeria” in the city for 2025.

“Diners book weeks in advance for a taste of the new standard in tavern‑style pizza,” Eater editors wrote. “The cracker‑thin crust emerges with a beautifully charred bottom and just enough chew to support toppings like fennel‑laced sausage, hot giardiniera, and tender Italian beef.”

The alert, dated Dec. 2, says Abbott Diabetes Care issued a letter to distributors, health care providers and affected customers after it found certain FreeStyle Libre3 and FreeStyle Libre3 Plus sensors gave incorrect low glucose readings.

“If undetected, incorrect low glucose readings over an extended period may lead to wrong treatment decisions for people living with diabetes, such as excessive carbohydrate intake or skipping or delaying insulin doses,” a message marked “Urgent Medical Device Correction” read on the product’s website.

“These decisions may pose serious health risks, including potential injury or death, or other less serious complications,” the message said.

The issue applies to approximately 3 million sensors distributed in the U.S., Abbott said. Customers can verify if their sensor serial number if part of the recall here, and a full list of instructions to follow for patients and health care providers can be found here.

As of Nov. 14, Abbott reported 736 serious injuries, and 7 deaths potentially linked to the issue. According to a media release, 57 of the injuries were in the U.S. All the deaths outside of the U.S., Abbott said in a release.

The sensors are meant to provide continuous glucose monitoring for people aged four and older with diabetes. It is intended to detect trends, track patterns and aid in the detection of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia.

In a statement sent to NBC Chicago, Abbott said the company has contacted customers about the medical device correction with instructions about how to request replacement.
