Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Northern Indiana, Southwest Michigan

Between 3 inches of 7 inches of snow could fall before air mass marches out of the area

Lake effect snow showers could result in accumulations ranging between 3 inches and 7 inches in Northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan before the winds shift and turn off the snow.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory until 3 p.m. CT and a Wind Chill Advisory through midday Thursday.

The lake effect snow is likely to affect the cities of La Porte and South Bend in North-central Indiana, as well as Niles, Benton Harbor, St. Joseph and Buchanan in Michigan.

Winds of 15 to 25 MPH will create drifting and blowing snow, likely making Interstates 80 and 94 snow covered and slick. Three people were killed last January in a chain reaction crash on Interstate 94 that involved more than 45 vehicles.

Winds currently traversing from the northwest to the southeast will rotate and come from the west late Wednesday, shutting off the snow.

A Wind Chill Advisory means that very cold air and strong winds will combine to generate low wind chills. That could result in frost bite and hypothermia if precautions aren't taken. Prolonged wind chill temperatures of -10 to -20 degrees are expected through midday Thursday.
