The energy from the lightning blew out cement, shattered windows and caused the garage door to buckle. NBC Chicago's Katie Kim reports. (Published Monday, June 22, 2015)

A bolt of lightning that struck a tree in Buffalo Grove home on Monday was blamed for causing severe damage to a nearby home.

Homeowner Jamie Goldstein said she was inside the house on the 2000 block of Wright Boulevard around noon when the blast shook the entire structure. She rushed downstairs to find her garage full of smoke.

The energy from the lightning blew out cement, shattered windows and caused the garage door to buckle.

"It was just the loudest thunder. I mean, people heard it from miles away," Goldstein said. "That'll be my new summer project -- fixing up all the damage."

There were no injuries and power was cut to the home. Goldstein said she expects to be without power for about a week.
