Strong Storms Drop Hail, Rain in SW Suburbs

Hail with a half-inch diameter reported in Channahon

Strong storms moved through Will County late Tuesday morning and into the afternoon, bringing heavy rain, lightning and hail to some southwest suburbs.

The National Weather Service said the storm developed over the area around 11 a.m., and produced hail with a half-inch diameter in Channahon.

The storm moved at a rate 40 mph toward Joliet and Romeoville, according to the NWS, and brought with it penny-size hail, strong winds, brief downpours and occasional lightning strikes.

Cities and towns affected by the storm included Lockport, Joliet, Plainfield, Rockdale, Ingalls Park, Shorewood, New Lenox, Channahon and Elwood, the NWS reports.

Residents in Joliet reported pea-sized hail just after 11 a.m.

"Stay away from high objects outdoors such as trees," a special weather statement read. "Heavy rainfall could lead to standing water on roadways and poor visibility."
