Snow Could Impact Rush Hour Commute

System only lasted a few hours

Chicago drivers were in for a tricky commute this evening.

The National Weather Service said a system of snow was heading toward Chicago  just in time for rush hour.

"Drivers are urged to be cautious when driving this evening, and to be alert for rapid changes in weather conditions," warned NWS.

Andy Avalos added:

Thursday:Partly to mostly cloudy and cold early this morning; cloudy and becoming windy with light snow developing later this afternoon and evening.  Temps will slowly climb to near 30 this afternoon, but south winds between 10 to 20 mph and gusts to 25 mph will still make it feel quite cold.

Thursday night:Light snow may mix with some freezing drizzle before ending early tonight leaving up to an inch of accumulation;  two inches possible far north near the state line.  Breezy and not as cold overnight as previous nights with lows between 25 to 29.

That mix of wind and sleet could have lead to hazardous road conditions and long commutes home for drivers, according to NWS.

One solution for drivers is to check out the Illinois Department of Transportation's new website Getting around Illinois for up-to-date weather related road conditions and closures.

The other option is taking public transportation or Metra.

Snow Command held a press conference at 3:30 p.m. with more information regarding the city's preparation for heavy traffic and the icy weather expected this evening.
